Autor raises his arm to shield his eyes from the narrow, bright beam of light as it ricochets in the curved spaces of the jar. A sudden swell of heat warms the surface of the glass and the surrounding area; a ball of white fire held captive and shining steadily.

"Mia," Autor murmurs, "did it work? Because if it did, you are brilliant."

"I think it did," Mia says with a smile.

The boy slings an arm around her shoulders and kisses her, quick and feather-light, on the cheek. "Thank you," he says, releasing her. "I owe you a great deal."

Mia laughs and throws an arm around him herself.

"Goodness, you're just swinging about everywhere. But you're welcome."
