(no subject)

At a table next to the Window, there is a young red-haired woman reading a magazine. Her yellow dress is short-sleeved and nice enough, although rather late 40s, early 50s, and the magazine cover has a young Marilyn Monroe on it.

Not that Nataliya A. Shostakova, lieutenant in the NKVD, is reading about her.

No, the April 1952 edition of LIFE has an article entitled Have We Visitors From Outer Space, and she's studying it. Mostly studying it. Sometimes she looks up and glances around at the Bar - the ever-shifting Bar, as far as she is concerned, that rarely looks the same three visits in a row.

The contrast between the article and her location is...interesting.

[ooc: finally actually EPing young!Natasha Romanoff instead of just lurking around in threads - so, briefly, this Natasha is in her twenties, comes in from the 1950s, and is slowly becoming aware that she's more wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey than a lot of other patrons. The modern-version won't really remember threads her younger self gets into (yet, anyway), but the younger!Natasha will be around often enough anyway. Any questions, either ping me or comment here

Clint's dressed in his civvies, looking between a print-off of the San Diego area archery meetings and his schedule for the next month, trying to figure out when he can fulfil the favor he owes Larissa and oversee a session.

If he absently winds his way towards Shostakova, it can be forgiven; she's wearing a dress very similar to one Natasha had last spring, and she's sitting with the amused suspicion he associates with his best friend. Also, he's distracted.

"Hey, Na--" he says, when he gets close, finally looking up from his schedule. And stills, then lets his brow knit. "-- dine?" he finishes, uncertainty registering in his voice.

Well. Fuck.

He didn't know that'd been her married name. Okay.

"Clint Barton," he says. He switches his stuff to his left hand, then offers his right. "Sorry. My wife comes here, and you look ... a lot like her. "Sorry. My wife comes here, and you look ... a lot like her. I know Milliways does that, just--" he laughs, slightly. "It's weird."

Especially as he's 95% sure that's not what's going on.

"Not quite a doppelgänger," he says, grin quirking the sight of his mouth. "She looks young for her age, but I'd bet you're younger. Don't tell her I said that."

He's silent for an awkward moment. "I don't want to distract you...?"

Clint turns the seat out a bit as he takes it. "I take it you're not reading about Monroe?"

He folds the archery schedule in half and tucks it into his book, before setting both on the table.

"Huh." His brow furrows, again. This is a common state for it. "I didn't realize people took all of that seriously enough for LIFE to cover it."

He tips two fingers to a waitrat, cheerfully. It's awesome, now that he's figured out they can tell the Bar who he is and get his order from her. It's like being a regular.

"Well, if you world has nuclear weapons, I can see those shaking up people's ... view of what's viable, you know?"

Clint rubs his thumb against a knuckle. He knows now that aliens do exist, but he's seen Coulson's face. Maybe Fury knew about aliens, but he's almost certain Phil didn't.

"You studying in the States?" he tilts his head at the magazine. "I never know, with the translation thing."

He laughs, quiet. "I don't read enough. I'm impressed, though -- I know most of your alphabet, so I've just about caught up to your average Russian 3 year old."

He accepts the coffee from the waitrat with a quiet "thanks."

"Not to the USSR," he says, tone faintly regretful. "I do some work with the International Criminal Police Organization, but that's only sent me into Russia once. You guys pretty much take care of yourselves."

He's quiet for a moment, then approaches the elephant in the room. Natasha's dangerously intelligent; it'd do more harm to think he could keep a lot of intel from her. "I'm from the 2010s, and we're uneasy allies these days. Things were still tense when I signed up for the army, so I thought I should try my hand at Russian. I'm lucky no one asked for it," he adds, with a grin and a drink of coffee. "Languages don't like me."

He laughs. "Tiring," he says, because it is. He's more than recovered from his last bout of jet lag, but it's a killer. "I'm used to it," he adds, after a moment's thought; it's quieter, and more honest. "I spent a lot of my growing up years in Latin America -- Brazil maybe half the time. That was all by land, and we weren't r-- well, we were actually pretty poor. So business class flights and hotels and Paris was kind of a shock to my system."

He shrugs, amiably. "I like it, and for the most part I try to see at least a bit of the country while I'm there. Sample the food."

"Nah, it's exciting the first couple times," he grins, slightly. "Maybe he can take you along, sometime. Why should you take our word on it?"

He'll believe that when he sees it (... and maybe not even then).

"Well, if it's the sort of plane with politics attached, exciting's a toss-up." Clint's tone is a bit fond, maybe even nostalgic. "There's more support craft than fighter jets."

They'll talk about planes for awhile, before drifting to sci-fi. Clint doesn't have anything to contribute on the latter, but he doesn't mind listening. Nataliya Alianovna has always been interesting, especially about the things she loves.

Later, he'll debate writing the older (he has to correct for his initial adjective of grown-up) her a letter, standing over the bar for nearly a minute. Then he'll think better of it; there's some things that really should be said face-to-face.
