Rome's been pretty good for William Douglas lately, just to guess from looking at him. He's gotten himself some new clothes, a jacket and a hat which he tosses casually onto the barstool next to him when he takes a seat. Then he plunks down a handful of coins. "Right, Bar, good to see you again. Now. How much whisky will this buy? In bottles that won't look out of place where I come from? --Grand, just keep them for me till I'm ready to go back, thanks. And do you have that book I was supposed to be reading?"

One of the bottles he hangs onto before Bar can tuck it away for storage; he pours himself a drink and settles in to try to concentrate on some serious reading.

...Within about five minutes he's gazing up at one of the television screens instead, and asking for something to eat.

Brienne comes in from a particularly fierce practice session. She's washed up, but her face is still red, and her practice sword hangs from her belt. She sits heavily at a table with a large glass of lemonade, and looks around.

There's a boy nearby who looks--oh, not from her world, but from one closer to it than most here. "Good day," she says, without thinking much about it.

"Of course." What, does he think it's for decoration?

(But no. Brienne knows what he thinks, naturally, and understands his surprise.)

"I do a lot of fighting." Her mouth twists, a bit. "There's been a war." She looks at him, taking in his clothes and build again. "You're at your king's court, then?" He looks dressed for it.

Brienne gives a short laugh. "Oh, everyone is fighting. The king on the Iron Throne--Tommen--is fighting those who rebelled against him--the North and the Riverlands and Stannis Baratheon's men. And the ironborn--islanders, who are reavers and pillagers--are taking advantage of the chaos to attack everyone, and so are all manner of outlaws."

"Who's the Pope? Are you an ambassador to a foreign king?" He seems a bit young for such a delicate position; she's a little impressed, and a little curious.

Oh, well, that's a question. If he'd asked who was wrong, Brienne would have a simpler answer. But--"I entered the war in the service of King Renly. He was--would have been--the best king." She still believed that. Wasn't he chivalrous and kind? "But he was murdered in a most treacherous fashion, and most of those who had sided with him went to join the Lannisters--Tommen's family. I couldn't serve them." For any number of reasons. "I swore an oath to serve Lady Catelyn Stark, mother of the northern rebel leader. She was murdered, too, and I'm searching for her daughters who were stolen from her, as I promised I would." A complicated story, told in the simplest way Brienne could manage.

She nods at his explanation of the pope. "Oh, yes, the church--I've met people here who talk of it. It's like our Faith, only your pope sounds much more powerful. Are you there to persuade him to help your king?" It seems a logical quest.

That sounds normal enough--a king making a show of his piety.

"Thirteen and eleven, or thereabouts." It's a thrilling tale, in its own way. "It was very wicked, yes. First the girls were taken, and then Lady Catelyn and her son Robb were murdered at a wedding feast, where they were guests. I don't know if your world has guest-right, but in ours, it's sacred."

"That's happened, in your world?" Brienne's face darkens. There's no cynicism in her expression, but there is recognition. She's seen too much to be shocked by much of anything, now. "Monstrous."

"--well you're looking right at home."

If it sounds a little stilted, well, Jamie hadn't expected to see William here. Actually, he hadn't expected to see here at all-- had been about to turn right back around and return to Scotland. But then there was William. And it's been a while.

Jamie's smiling too, if with a little more reserve. "Aye, it's me alright. How's-- how's Rome?"

"Aye. Aye, she--" He breaks into a grin. "A wee lad. They're both good. Both fine."

He should say no, he should get back to court--

"Aye, why not? Raise a glass to wee James."

Of course he's called James.

Jamie raises his glass.

"No, that's alright," Jamie says. "Got me own wine and whisky, don't I. And I canny have anyone wondering where it's come from."

"Oh, aye. I thought you meant--" Well, let it go. It's been a while, and they parted awkwardly-- it's bound to be strange for a bit. "So what's it like, Rome?"
