Mike might not have liked it, but he understood. He understood Indy's compulsion to go after the idol again—Indy would never admit it, but Henry Senior isn't the only Jones with an obsession. And, in the wake of a curt, almost throw-away comment about this afternoon's break-up with Lilly, Mike understood the other necessity for his roommate to get some time out of the bar.

So, it's with very little compunction that Indy descends the stairs tonight, garbed in his trademark adventuring gear and toting a shabby duffel bag. There's no hiding the grimness about his demeanor, but it blends well with the gritty resolve. Truth be told, he looks more focused than he has for several days.

He stops by the bar, scribbles a quick note to his ( friends ) and orders a final bourbon.

One for the road.

A second ago, there was an empty space in the bar; now it's gone, replaced by Indy and Meg, both of them dressed to the nines and looking decidedly worse for wear.

Meg's barely set foot in the bar before she's racing off to the bathrooms at top speed, hitching up the tight skirt of her dress the better to run; when she returns a few moments later, at least a little of her irritation seems to have disappeared.

Indy, on the other hand, with his swollen fingers and despondent air, doesn't look like anything as simple as a trip to the bathroom is going to cheer him up. He heads straight to the bar and orders a stiff drink.

[OOM: The day after Indy and Veronica returned to the bar with the idol, Indy popped back to New York and delivered the prize to Marcus. This handwaved trip was recounted to Meg tonight, before she wangled an invite to the grand exhibit opening gala.

Subsequently in Indy's world, the well-publicized story of the idol's recovery reached many places...]

Indy is downstairs lounging at a table, feet up on a chair, still reveling in the success of his recent mission—and possibly in the good sex he got on his return. There's a bandage wrapped around his right forearm, a beer, a basket of jalapeño poppers, and a calm self-contented disposition.

Veronica and Indy got back earlier this evening, fading back in near the door. Magic amulets are so convenient, aren't they?

Indy, with the idol in tow, had immediately made his way upstairs to check on things (and probably to show off, too); Veronica meanwhile had opted to stay downstairs, sidling up the bar for a drink and an opportunity to remove all of those damn time period-appropriate hairpins. Why were buns ever in style?

So: twenty-first century Girl Detective at the bar in a utilitarian 1930's-style skirt and jacket, sipping a gin and tonic for the look of things.

Arithon, hair short and wearing 90% modern clothing*, is in the bar. He's got a book (not in English) spread out in front of him, a plate of ignored food to the left of him, and a mostly empty pot of tea to the right.

The tea cup hasn't left his hand since he picked it up. Arithon has just begun researching Indian and English history, as he's been told that India is where people may assume he's from.

It is both fascinating and horrifying.

* Annie Wells still hasn't gotten him out of his boots and jewelry.

So last night, Indy made Meg an offer she couldn't refuse. The early part of this evening was therefore spent in intensive training—the art of alcohol has advanced a fair amount since Meg's day—but by the time Happy Hour rolls around, Indy feels confident enough in Meg's prowess that he sends her to change into her bartending outfit while he writes the specials up on the board:

Once he's done, Indy looks impatiently in the direction of the stairs. Fortunately, Meg is well-practiced in the art of the quick change, and it's only another few seconds before she comes bouncing cheerfully back down the stairs. Indy gives her a grin and flings over a bar towel. "Okay. Open it up."

The miniskirted ballerina beams back and turns to the bar.

"Salut, everyone! What'll it be?"

Indy was pretty drunk when he left Lilly at the wedding reception in Tortall and returned to the bar. The relatively simple task of removing his tunic, boots and leggings turned into a long and arduous event—a battle royale in which victory very nearly went to the hose. However, doggedness eventually won through over malcoordination, and the outlandish clothes were successfully shed. It was only while he was getting set to sprawl out on the couch for the evening that he actually remembered about his bartending shift.

*****

As a result, Veronica is already waiting for him as he gets downstairs, and making significant glances at her watch. "Where were you?" she queries once he's shambled behind the bar and sloshed his face in one of the sinks.

"A wedding," is the grunted reply.

"I guess they had a bartender too?"

Indy mumbles something under his breath, and Veronica just laughs.

Over the next hour, he offers her some quick and dirty training, and spills far more drinks than his student. But, by the end of it, there is at least a semblance of sobriety about him—enough that he can work the shift semi-professionally. Veronica, in the meantime, is having a blast, and after flipping through the book of drinks, she writes up the Specials:

When he's satisfied that everything's ready, Indy takes his usual serving position and gives her the word. "Alright, we're on the clock. Open her up."

She gives him a nod, and tosses a bar towel over her shoulder.

"Okay, guys. Jones and Mars are at your service and Happy Hour is on. What'll it be?"
