Sharpe hasn't got back to Normandy yet - he's still four days' ride from home. However, he was only going there because it's the most reliable way he knows to get to the bar, and he wanted to come here first.
Therefore, when he finds Milliways behind the door of his room at the roadside inn, it actually lightens his grim expression - a little, and only with relief, but it does.
