The weather has been bad lately, appropriate for the season, but not conducive to religious ceremonies. Today would have been the day for blessing the foundation stone for Javert's church, but when Father Harman went out to check the progress a few days ago, he found not only Javert but Valjean, camping out in the mud, not quite as done as Javert thought he'd be.
The atmosphere out there had been tense, not calm, but perfectly polite, so Father Harman blithely ignored whatever must have been happening to bring the former adversaries to this uneasy truce. They would likely tell him in time, anyway. For now, they civilly agreed to postpone by two days.
Today, after checking again that the new date would in fact still be feasible, Father Harman comes back in from a drizzly outside, rather wet despite the umbrella he's carrying and the large wellie boots he's wearing (which he leaves by the back door, as they're caked with an impressive amount of mud from Javert's building site), and puts up a notice:
re. Blessing of Foundation Stone for Church -- Postponement of Ceremony
To everybody who was going to come to the laying of the foundation stone for the church being built in the forest, please note that the ceremony has been postponed by two days due to inclement weather. The new date for it is Friday, April 4th, at the same time and, naturally, in the same place.
With apologies for the inconvenience,
Fr. P. Harman, SJ
Then, he gets rid of the wet umbrella as well, takes off his damp coat, and sits by the fireplace in shirtsleeves, drinking hot tea to get warm again while drying out.
