The third time Milliways appeared, it was on one of those lost colonies where the original corporate founder had been seized in a hostile takeover, the wormhole coordinates had been lost, and the supply ships had stopped coming.

Sometimes ART and its crew could forge some paperwork and help these lost colonies secure legal independence. But that wasn’t going to happen with this one. There weren’t enough humans and augmented humans left to sustain the colony. All we could do was evacuate the survivors.

(It could have been worse, I guess. There could have been no survivors left at all.)

So, yeah, I was in kind of a bad mood (well, worse than usual) when I walked in. And also I’d already decided I was going to stop pretending to be an augmented human, because if a combat omnic like Bastion could be accepted here, then so could a rogue SecUnit.

Except Bastion had never lied about itself (it couldn’t) and I had. Owning up to that was not something I looked forward to. But 1) pretending to be Rin forever, or 2) avoiding Milliways and 2a) its wonderful library and 2b) media collection forever, were things I looked to even less. (Not that I hadn’t seriously considered both options.)

The first thing I did was get my drones back from the Bar and put them in place, because I was really going to need them to save me from unbearable eye contact in the conversations I was about to have.

Wen Ning is making breakfast in the kitchen. Well, mostly. Trying to.

A rat showed him how to turn on the gas hob and the water faucet, and the rest he is working out from first principles and opening all the cupboards and drawers. There are cupboards that are various degrees of cold inside that contain food (he doesn't take anything that's labelled), and an entire cold room that contains all the meats and vegetables you could possibly think of, and some he has no idea about.

So, Wen Ning is cooking congee and making a lot of side dishes and toppings to go with it. There are so many people here that he knows, and so many new friends: - he would like to give them a breakfast they like. Wei-gongzi is here, and his jie-jie, and -- well, Wen Ning would never be so bold as to offer Hanguang-jun breakfast, but if he, you know, happens to be there anyway, Wen Ning has some fried lotus roots and slightly wilted radishes dressed with sesame that will probably go with plain congee  for a vegetarian (vegan? Lecter-qianbei  had mentioned them, but Wen Ning hadn't completely understood what the difference was) who eats no spice at all, just in case.

And then, there are all the new people he's met whom he'd happily feed breakfast and tea, too.

Well, with the one exception of Jin-er-gongzi (whom he has not met in here, thank the merciful Guanyin): - were he to turn up, Wen Ning would probably hide underneath the furthest shelf in the cold room.

(OOM: I have many sorrows; I know how long the night is.)

Wei Wuxian, wrapped in his more rough robes in dark greys and dull reds, steps up to the bar. He has a heavy sheaf of papers, which he attempts, momentarily, to straighten with tired fingers when he sets them on the polished wood.

After a few moments of conversation, the papers disappear, and Wei Wuxian bows, carefully. Then he takes the bowl of lotus soup the bar gives him in return, he retreats to his usual seat by the fire, but once there is more interested in putting a fresh edge on the trowel he digs out of his sleeve's pocket than eating.
