Kate smiles — and just as quickly deflates.

"Oh. I don't have a mama no more. She died."

She tugs on her braid, fingers working nervously until the tip is a little frizzed.

"But daddy needs help mindin' the house, an' someone to cook, and of course there's boys to help harvest and mind the animals."
