Valjean did not enter the bar with much money, which is unfortunate given his propensity towards giving the stuff away. Still, he comes to the bar tonight after leaving the stable, and engages in a lengthy, and very quiet, conversation with Bar.
He leaves satisfied. And hopefully some other people will be too. The next time William Evans comes to the bar, he will receive another anonymous donation of the same amount - fifty dollars - as last time. Gavroche and Eponine also receive this amount each, to be exchanged into the currency they use, with no name attached.
And every child of sixteen years or younger will receive one gold louis d'or, to the worth of 20 French francs, circa. 1832. In modern money - or even in the future - who knows what that is worth? Bar is under strict instruction not to reveal the source.
He has some other gifts to deliver, but will do that in person. The money for the children is more important, in any case.
That done, he disappears. Christmas is a time to thank God for His gift to the world, but there is also a need to spend the time with people. He will do some of both, tonight.
