Christmas Eve Happy Hour

The holidays are a time for family -- nuclear, extended, and otherwise -- and Nita's been doing more than her fair share of holiday travel as a result. Thank the Powers for her subsidized gating privileges at the Crossings. This year, Milliways is her penultimate stop; she'll head back to Earth to spend the 25th with her dad and the Rodriguezes.

When she leans on the counter, she asks Bar wryly, "So, what dark powers are threatening us this year, huh?"

A napkin appears. "... Kidnapped Santa?" Another napkin. "Pox? ... Monsters, too, huh. ... Wow. But is that it? Really? ... No, I didn't mean it like that, it sounds bad. It's just, you know. Comparatively speaking. ... Well, I'm glad everyone's okay. ... Sure, yeah, if you need the break, but I don't know anything about alcohol. ... If you say so." She laughs softly and pats the counter. "Have a good nap."

"You're punishing people for not knowing or celebrating a holiday. What if they're part of a religion that doesn't celebrate it even if they're from Earth? And of course there are the people from different worlds who have no idea what Christmas is. So there's no real way for them to help save Christmas and earn the free drink if they don't know such a thing exists or because they don't give a rat's ass about it," he says.

"Which, if I remember correctly, is not really part of the Christmas spirit, is it?"

Nita blinks at him, taken aback.

"They can get a drink half-off if they don't celebrate or have never heard of it," she points out, trying not to feel defensive.

"And I heard there was some rescue mission to save Santa. You think I should change the sign?"

"And what's so special about Santa anyway that rescuing him deserves a free drink?"

He leans against the bar.

"What do people who celebrate Christmas but didn't help save Santa get?"

[nita_callahan]

"A candy cane and a really generous amount of booze?"

She spreads her hands.

"If the cultural and possibly mystical significance of Santa to multiple cultures on Earth and represented here in the bar doesn't do it for you, consider it my thank you to the patrons of Milliways who risked their safety to rescue another patron."

"There's nothing mystical about Santa. I will admit to him being a rather annoying cultural significant figure, however. Honestly, though, I don't understand why people like him so much. The amount of hope he creates is rather depressing and dangerous. It's almost as if he wants people to suffer."

Ah. And now he's gone off onto tangent land.

Oh, he's one of those types.

"Gosh, hope, how terribly rude of him."

"You don't believe me? You don't even understand what I'm talking about, do you?"

He's his own type, thank you very much.

"I imagine you're gonna tell me whether I do or not."

"No. Of course not. It's not as much fun that way," the Fool says, with an idle flick of his hand. "Your mind will be closed and there's no good discussion to be had."

"I am having the weirdest sense of deja vu," Nita mutters.

"Would you like something to drink? Half-off."
