Given the generosity of a troll that Ysalwen only knows by his Trollian name of chirurGeneralist, she is currently working at figuring how how best to use a holographic interface with multiple windows to look at data, model chemical reactions and the side effects of various shielding parameters, and feed that information back into spell design layouts, among other things.

This alchemized tablet-journal is pretty great.

Maybe someday soon she'll add a fourth data window. Possibly one for graphs?

Liranan, meanwhile, is snoozing on her foot because the whirling colors are really distracting and kind of remind him of the Fade. Napping is less stressful.

Sameth's been working back at home but he's feeling stuck and forgot to eat dinner.

When Milliways appears, he's glad of the distraction and stops when he sees Ysalwen and her set up, "What are you working on?"

"Sameth!"

Ysalwen looks up from her work, smile flickering across her face.

"Mostly getting used to new equipment, I think? How have you been?"

"Busy, good. I built a drone with Jim here and we sent it up to get close to the shield around Milliways. It blew up but we're trying to learn more. There's so much magic up there,"

He looks over her various screens to see what he recognizes.

There may be equations dealing with nuclear radiation, half-lives, and energy containment, if he's into that.

Most of the rest of it is barely familiar to some Thedosians.

"A drone? What's -- a mechanical male bee?"

"No, a small flying robot that's controlled from the ground with cameras attached and I put on a device for detecting types of magic,"

After a bit of looking, he finds a sketch of Jim's original drone with the triangle design and then his own interpretation of it.

"Oh. Huh."

She thinks about that for a few seconds, brow furrowing.

Then --

"Which Jim? I've only met the one, but it's a relatively common name on some versions of Earth, isn't it?"

"I guess, I'm not from an Earth. He's English, a little shorter than me with dark hair and I'm not always sure what to make of him. I like how he thinks about making things,"

He didn't like all the people that Jim considered friends.

"Oh, he talked to you about something concrete?"

What?

"How does he make things?"

"Yes, he was building his drone to explore the shield around Milliways and try to understand how it works. Why, what did he talk to you about?"

Ysalwen is better with people than he is, her tone is worrying.

She smiles, quick and bright, but there's a hint of hardness to her eyes.

"We're both very angry people, is all."

Jim looking at the shield around Milliways makes her nervous. Because all some people want to do is watch the world burn.

"Oh, he didn't come across that way to me just curious. Why is he angry?"

Maybe working with him isn't the best idea.

"I don't really know."

It's not a lie, not at all.

"If I did, I would tell you. A lot of us here are angry, I know. Just -- "

"Thank you for letting me know. Anger and curiosity tend to end badly."

"They don't have to, but frustration on top of it -- "

She shakes her head a little.

"Anyway. I'd advise caution? If you were asking for my advice."

"I'll use it. I mean I would anyway because the magic here is so powerful but now I'll use more."

"Is there something you want to learn from the barriers here?"

She's curious.

"I hadn't really thought about them until I started talking to him but now I'm curious. The Old Kingdom has a number of layers of protections and I need to strengthen some of the older ones. Understanding what works here might give me a few new approaches."

"Do you see the seething void of the end time and space being a problem for your Kingdom in the near future?"

That would be concerning.

"No, but I felt the power of Orannis and even a small measure of the protection here would be useful. I'd rather have more protection than is actually needed."

"Sensible. I'd offer to help, but my skills don't lend themselves to anything like this, really."

Sometimes it frustrates her. But so it goes.

"Thank you. I really do appreciate it."

"I like sharing my work and your perspective is always useful. Have you made anymore progress on the nuclear research?"

"Hmm. What do you know about personal shielding? And small-scale shielding? Not an entire kingdom, but a single person, or a small group of people, or a room?"

"A lot actually, its very common in the Old Kingdom from places only certain people can enter to diamonds of protection when traveling. The Charter Stones connect to protect the Old Kingdom and the Wall is a larger one. Also a single stone can act against protection if needed. And our armor as well has spells of protection in them."
