Anne-girl, with tea, writing.

Well, for the most part. When she isn't being distracted by watching people in the bar, or by the gleam of moonshine on frosted window-pane.

After all, young Miss Shirley is ever so dedicated to her work.

Elaine, like a good waitress, notices that Anne's tea might be cold, so she gets a new cup for her at the bar.

"Good even, Anne. And how are you faring?"

Anne looks up with a smile.

"Oh, thank you, Elaine. I'm doing quite well, thanks. How are you?"

"Oh, mostly wonderful, but that's nothing new." She grins. "You look happy."

"I am," she admits. "I--Gilbert and I--we had a long talk, a few weeks ago."

"Oh, I'm so glad. You were so upset when you two weren't speaking to each other. Are things better between the two of you?"

"Ever so much," she says, happily, and her eyes are starry and bright.

"We're--oh, Elaine. He loves me. And I--I love him, ever so much. More than I ever thought possible."

Her smile is radiantly bright.

Elaine smiles and hugs her friend impulsively. "Oh, Anne! I'm so happy for the two of you!"

It had been painful to see Gilbert hurting so, as well.

Anne laughs, and hugs her back, tightly.

"Well, it's lovely," she says, sobering, "but I feel terrible about Bran. I really did like him, Elaine, and maybe I could have loved him, if..."

If Gilbert hadn't been there.

She doesn't really need to finish the sentence.

Elaine can figure it out. "Maybe you could, and maybe you mightn't have, anyway," Elaine says gently.

"He will be fine. He has many friends here."

"I just hope," Anne says, wistfully, "that we'll be able to be friends again, one day. He was so kind when I was unhappy here, you know."

She sighs.

"Anyway, it's been a very nice few weeks, and everyone at home is terribly excited for Christmas. Are you?"

"I am sure that you shall be friends one day, and may it be soon, Anne." She pats her friend's shoulder gently.

"Oh, yes, ever so much. I've been making gifts for people. And Ryan and I have a Christmas tree. It's just...so cozy. I'm so happy."

"That's wonderful, Elaine."

Anne's smile is very warm, and crinkles the corners of her eyes delightfully.

"Amy and I have been very busy with our Christmas plans, you know. And I've been decorating Green Gables--well. As much as Marilla will allow me."

Elaine smiles. "Which is how much, Anne?"

Anne beams.

"More than she used to let me," she says, cheerfully. "And Davy enjoys helping. How is the little boy you've taken under your wing, Elaine?"

"He is well. Contented, though he is still quite shy. He won't say it, but I think he's looking forward to Christmas too."

When she looks up, she might catch faded blue eyes.

Roland is sitting by the fire with a book, and a glass of wine.

"And what little boy wouldn't?" Anne smiles. "Perhaps he'd like to come help Amy and I decorate, or make cookies, one day."

Elaine nods. She's not quite sure when David will be ready to meet other people, but Anne and Amy are sure to like David.

"Perhaps so, Anne."

Look up she does, and young gray eyes catch old blue ones, and Anne pauses, offers him a small smile, her pen poised over her paper.

"It's a lovely evening to just sit and read, isn't it?" she asks, softly.

Roland's smile is a little bit smaller. It's just how he is.

"You say true." Peaceably. "Though better inside than out, I wot."

"And Ryan?" Anne encourages, smiling a bit more brightly. "How is he these days?"

Elaine colors, only slightly, because well...really, they've been together for over six months! "He is well. We're very happy."

She pauses. "I wish my father could meet him, sometimes."

He would like Ryan, very much. In fact...he's very much the sort her father would have chosen for her.

"Oh, I don't know about that."

Wide eyes turn to the window, and she rests her chin on her hand, tracing the pattern of frost on cold glass wistfully.

"It's beautiful outside, with all the snow, and everything so silver and white and black, don't you think? Even the cold feels so deliciously fresh. Although," she says, coming back to herself with a sigh and a laugh, "it would not at all be nice for reading. A fireside is an infinitely better choice for that, you're quite right."

"I was out earlier this afternoon." Roland closes his book, marking his place with a finger. "'Twas mostly black and white, then -- with blue sky, of course. Nice enough for sitting on the swing and smoking."

"I understand," Anne says, gently.

"I miss Matthew, too. And there's nothing I wish more than that he could see how happy Gil makes me."
