All is still in the mountains. And then the horizon erupts in flames, the deep pink and purple flaming into impossible red, as the ground shakes with the deep, deep, deep call of a drum.

A demon from an ancient world stirs.

A creature of shadow and flame, the Balrog sets the ground alight as it crawls fluidly, digging claws like steel into the earth. Fire wafts from its nostrils and eyes; fire crackles across its massive body. The odors of blood and charred flesh flood the air around it.

The Balrog surveys the bar, still a ways off. Wings stretch as it raises itself to its full height, an inferno standing firmly in place. Swinging a hand out, the Balrog conjures a fiery sword. A multi-pronged whip made of molten lava cracks in its other hand.

Its roar of challenge is deafening.

Sallie's birthday was September 30th. She doesn't really count the number so much anymore, but it was pretty funny watching Splinter and Mike disagree on what to cook for dinner (they ended up making chicken teriyaki under Sallie's direct supervision).

Currently sitting on the customer side of the bar, Sallie's munching on a piece of cake left over from Friday's dinner. No candles though - fire hazard.

Well, if you're Ysalwen, you say 'hello', and you say 'well met', and you buy her a drink, and you don't mention a word about her daughter. Or your nephew.

You also don't talk about the weather.

"Tell me, Flemeth, if you would. Have you ever thought about setting up a laboratory here?"

"Hah," laughs the white-haired old woman, dressed in maroon dragonskin leathers and not her previous swamp witch homespun. "And do you think any here would appreciate what you imagine I do with my experiments?"

"Well," says Ysalwen, after a frozen moment, "I suppose that would depend on what your experiments actually are, wouldn't it?"

Feel free to join them. It would probably be a welcome distraction.

When Seimei walks in and greets the Bar with a bow, as is his custom, he straightens up to find a napkin on the Bar's surface that wasn't there before. Well. A napkin note, actually.

"Ah! Yes, Madam, it will be an honor and a pleasure to assist you. I've tended bar before. I just need a few things..."

And so, not long after, Seimei is behind the Bar, his kimono sleeves tied up and back with a white cord. He greets everyone who comes up to the bar with a cheerful "Irasshimase!" (because where he comes from, that's just good manners).

The front door opens, and a very old woman in slightly swamp-stained clothing makes her slow way into the bar.

"I'd almost forgotten where I put this place. Always the last spot you look, like finding socks and old tea-cakes. Rather more edible than the tea-cakes."

Not that this is difficult.

She'll make her way to a seat by the fire eventually, and once there a waitrat will very rapidly bring her a cup of very strong-smelling tea and some pastries. Not tea-cakes, however. No, most definitely not those.

Somewhere up near the ceiling, a vampire is floating through the rafters. With surprising agility, given her height and the fact that she's got her red axe bass slung over shoulder, Marceline threads her way around the beams, occasionally strumming the bass and humming along to herself.

A few minutes ago, anyone watching the door might have seen her enter from a landscape that looked to be entirely made up of fire. What can she say, the Fire Kingdom is a nice place to jam this time of year.

But if she's at all startled about having stumbled into the Bar at the End of the Universe, or even noticed the change in scenery, Marceline doesn't show it.

A small, brightly colored whirlwind bursts in the door, following an uneven trajectory toward the far side of the bar, and, unusually for a whirlwind, shouting: "You can't catch me!"

Then it stops, suddenly enough to be a traffic hazard.

"This is a storage room," says Ikki, wrinkling her face. "Why is it bigger all of a sudden? Who moved the windows? What's that?"

"Who are you?"

They’re called trilobites – Mary knows that much from listening to other people in the Milliways. She’s not sure what world or time they hale from, but they are, by far, the ugliest form of creation that she’s ever laid eyes on. Just watching them undulate through their tank fairly makes her skin crawl.

So, perhaps it’s just a test of her own nerves, or perhaps it’s attempting to prove something to the absent Mr. Lowell that has Mary sitting before the tank on a stool with a sketch pad and pencil in her lap. She’s been scooting closer to the tank in increments until she is now quite close, and better able to attempt to capture the alien segmented bodies, the wriggling legs, the sweeping antennae.

Mary’s rather proud of herself for her courage, to be honest.

Until one particularly large trilobite (perhaps trying to be a helpful model) erupts out of a clump of vegetation and plasters itself to the glass, a mere foot from Mary’s nose.

Mary screams. The pad and pencil fly into the air, the stool overturns, and there’s a blur as she dashes to put the nearest solid object (column, sofa, fellow patron—she’s not picky) between her and the tank.

What? That thing practically tried to EAT her!

In the beginning, it was a nice day.

This is a word which here means 'pleasing', 'agreeable', or 'delightful', so it may come as a surprise to you, dear reader, to hear the day described as such, given the situation in Milliways these past two weeks. But then, 'nice' is such a relative term, don't you agree? And certainly it would be difficult for things to get much worse.

So it is: the unnatural winter outside seems a touch less chilling today, and the blood-red sky perhaps a shade less bloody, reflecting pinkly off the glittering frost and the shallow snowbanks. The general atmosphere inside the bar is a little less oppressive - a mood helped, no doubt, by the fact that this morning, Bar got almost every coffee order right. Even the Observation Window seems to be creaking a tad less oppressively.

Maybe, just maybe, everything's going to work out okay.

The front door is flung open and someone enters at a near run - someone with a leather trenchcoat and entirely too much jewelry and a thing for classy leather shoes.

Someone who's lean, hungry look could get him mistaken for a wolf, if he grows that hair out any longer.

Someone... who is just going to stand there and blink for a moment, if that is quite alright with everyone.

The door swings open and an old woman walks in. Well, the white hair suggests great age, as do the fine lines around her eyes and mouth. The armor and the muscular shape beneath it, as well as the upsweep of red-tipped horns (or a very fixed hairstyle) from her temples may, however, suggest otherwise.

Still.

She pauses, white brows lifted up in what might pass for surprise.

That expression quickly turns to pleasure -- and amusement -- as she surveys her new surroundings with bright golden eyes.

"Well, well, well. What have we here? It's dirtier than I would have thought, but I suppose one can't have everything."

Though perhaps, when one is in a bar, one might be best served by ordering a drink. Flemeth will get to that.
