William's spent his entire day out with the horses, because he found a door in the barn and wanted some Milliways' coffee. The weather's been colder and foggier, so he mainly stayed around the paddock and around the stalls.

He'd noticed some tack that was starting to look a little worn and took them inside after the other chores were finished. Inside, he found a table not too from the fire, which he's covered with bits of bridles, reins and halters that's he repairing with strong thread and leather. He's got a big mug of coffee and a plate of ham and biscuits as well as one with some cookies to munch on.

Luna is home for the Easter holidays, and with no High Inquisitor to lay low around, she is happily and gloriously out of uniform. Striped tights, purple skirt, pale green blouse. Red trainers, radish earrings, and a dragonfly clip in her hair. Whoever thought that something as simple as clothing could feel like rebellion?

But while thoughts of Hogwarts, Umbridge, and Dumbledore’s Army are never far away, right now Luna is far more focused on putting together Easter baskets for family and friends. A yearly creative challenge of candy and charms.

Luna is sitting cross-legged on a table in Milliways, the better to survey her current handiwork. The rest of the table’s surface is covered by a warren of palm-sized chocolate rabbits, which are hopping quite agilely for holiday sweets.

She’s been having so much fun, she’s made far more than she needs. Luna would probably be inclined to share.

Time to pay down his tab, he figures, and pouring drinks and talking with people, it's a nice change of pace. Besides, he's not about to say no to Bar. She treats him way too well.

People who know Gordon well know that he has two children, a wife, most of the population of Earth depending on him, and frequent sleep-shattering nightmares. He might not talk about most of that, but he has them all. It's part of being Gordon Freeman.

People who don't know him well... eh, well, they'll know that he's the tall guy with the green eyes and the thick glasses, if only because people who know him but not very well generally know that he carries a crowbar stuck through his belt at all times. Also guns. There's generally one or more about his person in some way, shape or form. Today it's not one of the standard sorts of firearm, it's a big glowing-barreled thing with three pinchy arms on one end and the kind of stock that suggests it's best wielded by someone with wrists of solid iron. He's taking it apart and going over some of the pieces at one of the tables in the Bar, because the Bar is a good place to go when the nightmares get to be enough of a problem that even holding Alyx or soothing the kids doesn't help. And, well, work is better than drinking, but if he needs to, he can do either at Milliways.

People who don't know him at all? They're probably just going to get Looked At, if they talk to him. He's not always the best when it comes to being verbal. Still, they're welcome to try. Who knows, he might change his mind about the talking thing.

The notebook, it goes everywhere with him now. Mostly, it stays plastered in the back pocket of his pants but every now and then he comes up with a pyramid play so frakking crazy but so frakking simple that he knows even the newbies will get it... and the other teams, if they're guided by someone who knows their pyramid, won't be expecting it. Then he's glad for the notebook so he can draw it out in full game code. Maybe it's an unfair advantage to his team that he has the years of experience, but he'd gladly sit out and be the substitute more often than not just to see other people loving the game. His game.

With one hand guarding the pad from enemy eyes, he scribbles out the play he dreamed up earlier. It's just frakked up enough so it ought to work, especially on the grass surface they have outside. He nods, taps the notepad with the eraser end of his pencil twice, and folds it shut with a grin that's smug as frak. Then he gets up from his table, orders a glass of orange juice, a glass of juni red, and a book -- any book -- from Bar. He takes his seat again at the closest table and examines the book.

A Brief History of Time. Sounds right up his alley.

Even though Kara's been sticking to water all day, chugging it throughout pyramid practice, she comes back inside and can't sit still long before she switches to alcohol. Leaning on the bar, she asks for booze and is presented with a tall tumbler of ambrosia, home in a glass. Picking it up, she wipes the sweat from her brow and glances around.

"Look," she says to the bar after a moment. "I hear that if I take along something from you I have a better chance of making it back here once I'm finally allowed to go home. A drink stirrer or a napkin or something." She hesitates. "Don't make it a frakking napkin. Give me a bottle cap."

That appears on the bar too: a thin black bottle cap with the word Milliways written in white cursive over a small star almost as vibrant a green as her ambrosia.

It'll do. When she makes it back to Galactica she'll punch a hole in it and wear it with her dog tags, but for now she slips it into her pocket.

[Not-quite-OOM, just prior: Physical therapy.]

"One more" turns into three more exercises by the time Gaeta departs the infirmary. Awful as he felt, it didn't feel right to leave off after so few; at least this way, he isn't wasting his or Dr. Tam's time with such a brief session.

Whether he'll be able to move from the couch he just collapsed on is another story. After requesting a glass of water from a waitrat, he gulps down three painkillers (the usual dose is two, but frak it, he hurts so much right now) before stretching along the couch's full length. Some minutes later, the same waitrat returns with a silver tray.

Gaeta eyes the tray's contents. "Um."

The rat chitters.

"Sorry for the language, but...what the frak is that?"

Squeak.

In lieu of pointing out that he doesn't speak rat, Gaeta just sighs, scoops up the small -- very colorful -- magazine, and opens it to take a look.

Apparently there's a tie-in comic book series for that famous squopera, Tentacles of Our Waves. Who knew.

They gave her a pin for her collar and some patches to sew onto her sleeve today, back at the Citadel. Ellen's good with this. She's also good with having to paint the new markings onto her armor. You do your own work, you don't slough it off onto other people.

Although, considering that come morning she's going to have to round up a few new faces and head for the RobCo factory, she figures she could use a little extra time to get all her gear in order first. Which is why she's currently wearing her old blue-and-gold Vault 101 jumpsuit; she has to sit down and sew the Paladin rank markings onto her Brotherhood fatigues somewhere, and she can't do that very well if she's wearing them, now can she?

(Dogmeat is under the table nearby, loudly and messily snarfing his way through a bowl of some kind of meat. Either one of them, or both of them, are available to be bothered.)

The specials show up on the board the minute he gets there. Bartending's fun -- at least he had fun the last time he was back here -- and if nothing else, he'll have paid off that new set of clothes Bar gave him after his trip to Ellen's world. The last thing he wants is to be known as some kind of freeloader. He's always paid his way, ever since he was seventeen and found himself alone, and there's no reason he'd stop doing it just 'cause he's stuck here.

Once Kara found the pyramid equipment abandoned for the night, she went out and practiced her aim like she's been holding a grudge against the backboards, helped by the dim light radiating from the building. It wasn't much, but she was stubborn enough to keep at it for over half an hour.

She's been back inside about the same amount of time when she opts out of another refill of her shot glasses and gets the whole bottle of Glen Docan from the bar instead. With that bottle in one hand she walks right up to the door and tugs at it.

Braces one foot against the wall and pulls again.

Then -- just in case she's completely frakking stupid here -- she decides to try pushing the door open instead. If possible, it works even less.

Mouth twisted in a sneer, she gives one more useless tug before backing off. She reopens the bottle, takes a long drink, and wipes her mouth with the back of her hand.

The weather is perfect for pyramid, sunny with a slight breeze and Sam has set up the backboards and found all the balls. He's hoping that having everything out will bring other players as he needs to meet more with his team and find out how good everyone is.

So far he's been practicing taking shots from different places, getting a sense of the shapes of the court and putting together possible strategies.

It all feels rather comfortable and though he's wearing Old Kingdom clothes, his linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, boots and breeches, Somersby feels fairly close by.

No time like the present to do a little planning. There's only so much frakking navel-gazing a guy can do and there is nothing, he decides, nothing at all wrong with running a godsdamn pyramid league here. As long as he's stuck, he has to be doing something and this isn't hurting a godsdamn soul. It's helping -- people were excited, at least at first -- and he's got his initial scouting report out to his team on the other players. He can't help but do things the way he always has. Team 3's got a sixth man now, so they're equal in size to the rest of the teams, and he's good to go.

Tonight he's sitting at a table with a bunch of plays sketched out. Yeah, yeah, they're not playing positions, but the game's gonna happen the same way whether they call someone a forward guard or rear guard or center or just hey you. When they get to the point where they're ready to finesse their play by way of positions and the associated expectations that go with those positions, he'll assign them to people. In his mind he already has. He's seen some of his teammates' strengths and weaknesses, and he knows just what to do with a bunch of rookies.

Train them.

That's why he's got rudimentary game plays in the works. Learning to work together, that's what makes a team a team. If they can do that, they can do anything. He's got a bottle of ambrosia, two shot glasses, a regular glass, and a pitcher of water. And that sketch pad and a marker, and if the shit on all those pages looks incomprehensible, well, that's part of the plan.

It's supposed to, especially to prying eyes. But he promised anyone from any team that he'd help them with their game, and he meant it. He'll teach anyone how the game works or how to strategize or how to create a good workable play or how to do an end run around the other team. He just won't teach them to do it as well as he can, that's all.

And there's still stuff from the Armory that needs to be sold off.

Well, fine. Fine. Ellen will find buyers for the rest of it somewhere. She's got a hefty chunk of caps at the moment, at least, that's a good start. What she's also got is orders from Knight-Captain Colvin to brush up on her heavier weapon skills- specifically, her heavier energy weapon skills. If she's going to be working on the RobCo project for any length of time, he says she'll need them. She hasn't got a Gatling laser yet, but she has got the weapon she was issued for the battle at Adams AFB, so...

"Bar?" Ellen says hesitantly as she shifts the massive energy cannon across her back. It's a lot less comfortable in her jumpsuit than her power armor, but the armor is being tuned up at the moment. "Can I get some kind of target that would be suitable for extended practice with a lightning gun, please? I don't think just shooting at hay bales or clay pigeons is going to do..."

Now, while it's nice and quiet outside, he can grab a little practice time. People are excited about the league and that's great, he loves it.

But he's always carved out time for throwing practice every day, even back on Caprica where the only people who care about pyramid are the people who survived the planet getting nuked. He's not gonna do things any differently here. Besides, it's nice out and he has to do something while he's here. It looks like that thing with Ellen and the armory is looming, but before that happens, there's this. This thing he loves, this thing he's really good at, this thing he's done all his life. He sets up one backstop, just one. This type of practice, it's finesse training. Memorizing every inch of this playing field: its bumps and lumps and pits and valleys, the way the wind blows in off the lake, the angle of the sun setting in the sky. That's all valuable data and he tucks it away for later use.

Fifteen game balls, fifteen shots. The first three go in like clockwork. The fourth is just wide, but five and six are almost perfect. He's feeling pretty good and hopes he never gets to a point where he has to say I used to be good at this. If it's the last frakking thing he does, he'll stay on his game.

Ellen's had time to get a number of things in order in anticipation of the next leg of her journey back home. The Bar was kind enough to grant her some pre-War newspaper articles about military preparations on the homefront in the months before the very end, so she's got more of an idea of what they'll be facing. It's... not pleasant. She really wishes she were able to reach Megaton from here, because she left all her pulse grenades and similar equipment in her house. All she can get here is Nuka-Cola Quantum and turpentine and some tin cans.

Alas.

Anyway, she's in the Bar now with a stack of maps and newspaper articles and plans to go over. And schematics, or at least partial schematics, for quite a few of her world's robots. And a bottle of Nuka-Cola, because she needs a drink.

She's botherable. Really.

At least the pyramid court gives her one more thing to do with herself during the day. After a morning spent there and most of her afternoon spent in the gym, she's freshly showered and ready to waste some time in the bar.

But first she checks the door. Just in case.

At this rate she'll be more surprised when it does happen, and that's a thought she's not wild about.

Bypassing the rats as usual, she picks up a whole bottle of ambrosia at the bar and takes it over to a booth, where she leans against the wall and kicks her legs up along her seat.

The past few days have been tiring, his projects aren't quite doing what he wants and he's feeling rather aware of the space where Kait might once have been. They're thoughts he doesn't like as he knows she doesn't need him at this point and so he goes to set up the pyramid court.

He spends most of the afternoon doing shots and practicing until he's as worn out as if he'd been working in the forge all day. As the light starts to fade, he sets light spells at the top of each backstop and keeps playing until he has just enough energy to put them away.

When its fully dark out, he'll go inside and sit at the counter with a towel, lots of cold water and a big dinner.

Oh look, it's your friendly neighborhood off-duty firefighter who's just received a note from Bar, reminding him that his tab has increased at a startling rate, thanks to numerous purchases of alcohol and food, plus an additional amount equal to one month's rent.

He pockets his sunglasses, sheds his jacket, and goes behind the bar, dutifully ignoring the sharp ache of want that twists his gut.

A long time ago on a different rock floating through space, four members of the Delphi Pythons -- the University at Delphi's pyramid team -- did a little P.R. work at a college fair. Had a table set up to talk pyramid and pyramid opportunities to prospective students. It was a pretty good day, as Sam recalls, and while no one who approached him or his teammates was a stranger to the concept of pyramid, they still got to do a lot of explaining, have a lot of laughs, and do more than a little showing off.

Today's even better, because this is gonna be their league run under their rules. And even better than that, the day's got two of the best forward guards left in the known universe talking up the game they both love. They've got a couple game balls with them (strictly for advertising purposes) and a hand-written poster by the table.
