Sherlock almost doesn't leave a note.
He almost doesn't leave the Stradivarius, either, but decides it's a gesture of trust to leave the violin on its stand rather than give it to the bar for safekeeping.
But a note ... several drafts of a note are now burning to ash in the fireplace, and he almost doesn't start another.
Almost.
But first he writes this:
Sinric,
I am leaving the bar for a time. I don't know how long I will be gone, and I can only hope I will be allowed back in afterward.
Thank you for your kindness and friendship. I must ask you for another kindness. If Jim approaches you, if he asks you what you know of me, please tell him I am his and his alone. It should be enough to soothe him.
Be well, my friend.
SH.
This makes it easier to let the words flow, and he writes:
My dear Jim,
I survived the fall from Bart's. I had to let you think I died until I knew you had no way to get word back to our world that I am still alive.
And then I stayed longer because I didn't want to leave.
I still don't want to leave, but I must. There is work to be done.
I will come back to you. I will.
The game plays on.
Yours always,
SH.
He leaves the notes with the Bar, and puts on the Belstaff coat for the first time in many weeks. At the door, he takes one more look around, and then the door clicks shut behind him.
