Tom walks in looking rather harried. He posts a sign on the bulletin board and then hurries back through the House of Arch painting to and another busy evening in the Underside.
The sign reads:
POSITIONS WANTED
The Lord and Lady of the House of Arch are seeking tutors (French language, Science, European and general world History, art, and music) as well as a part-time nanny for Ingress (age 6) and Gavroche (age 11)- two high-spirited, bright, magically gifted children.
(There are extremely cute wizarding pictures of Ingress and Gavroche waving)
We need reliable, experienced professionals for full-time or part-time positions within the House of Arch. Please fill out the application, and return it by owl to Tom and Door.
1. Where and when are you from?
2. What is your educational background?
3. What are your professsional qualifications?
4. What is your experience with children?
5. Please give us three references at Milliways we might contact who would vouch for your character.
OOC-Applicants, please cut and paste answers in replies, and see note in back room regarding the "interview" process ;)

Lord Tom Lady Door,
1. Where and when are you from?
Before arriving at Milliways, I made my home in London, last in August of 1898.
2. What is your educational background?
I am rather over-educated, by most standards, primarily in the physical sciences. I was educated at University College in London, originally for a medical doctorate, then with chemistry as a segue into physics and optics. Classes of some sort and practical research lasted from the time I was seventeen until the age of thirty.
3. What are your professsional qualifications?
Said education, above. As well, I was an assistant teacher for much of my time in London-- never with the full pay of a professor, nor the full power, but often enough I held classes of eight to thirty young men attempting not to blow themselves to smithareens with raw chemical compounds. As well as English, I speak and write fluently in French, Latin, Greek, and German.
4. What is your experience with children?
I have more experience with older children, however, I should be able to manage younger ones in small groups.
5. Please give us three references at Milliways we might contact who would vouch for your character.
I'm afraid I haven't spoken to terribly many people in my stay. The one I've spoken to most, Mrs. Susan Allgood, has sad to say indeed, passed on. Colonel John Sheppard might have a word or two to say of me. I applied for a Security position some months back with the young lady Sir Alanna, and spoke at length on aerodynamics with a young man who is evidently also a plane. Edward Kincade, though he gave his name as 'Eddie.' A fourth reference, in case one of those three should not recall me, would be a dark young man by the name of Mister Universe.
Should you seek me out to meet, I am not difficult to find; I am six feet tall, in good physical shape, and invisible.
Yours hopefully,
Dr. Hawley J. Griffin
PS Begging your Lord and Ladyships' pardons if I have misplaced gender pronouns in the addressing of this letter. Since meeting Sir Alanna, I have found it unwise to make assumptions.

She's not very good about doing only what she should, however.
1. Where and when are you from?
Originally, I am from Perivale, England, and I left in 1985. The more current answer is, correctly, where-ever and whenever I like.
2. What is your educational background?
Some Earth schooling, self-taught broad-based knowledge in explosives and the science thereof, currently holding graduate degrees in Time and Relative Dimensional Theory, as well as Intergalactic Relations.
3. What are your professional qualifications?
There are quite a few scribbled out phrases
I prefer to retain my amateur status.
4. What is your experience with children?
I was one, once. Once saved baby from hemavores. Once was nearly killed by a schoolgirl, but she got better. Am mentoring (somewhat) one Mary Lennox.
Oddly, she looks a lot like the girl that almost killed me...5. Please give us three references at Milliways we might contact who would vouch for your character.
There are quite a few more scribbled out phrases
Raven - the bird, but not the one that's always a bird, and not the big mountain man either. The one with the glitter and the cookies and the fuzzy bunny slippers.
Wash - pilot on board Serenity.
Eddie Dean - if you don't know who he is... maybe you should be asking for a babysitter too?

then pauses, and turns back, thoughtfully.
Educated she is not. But . . . she could use something to do, to be honest; and there are some skills she has that could use the professional work -
She rereads the notice, and then hurriedly rummages for a quill pen to scrawl her responses, forming her letters with a little more care than usual.*

Once delivering by owl was explained to her - which was a task and a half - Sallie addresses an application to Lord and Lady, of House of Arch and sends it off.
Dear Lord and Lady Arch - I apologize in advance if this is inappropriate, but I wanted to send in to you both an application, albeit probably not for exactly what you are requesting. I am a proficient piano player - have been playing for about 20 years. Can't help much on the history or science, though I know a bit of Earth botany and terraforming processes.
Keep me in mind if your children would ever want to learn Mandarin...
Sallie Reynolds
1. Where and when are you from? Shadow, year 2519.
2. What is your educational background? High school and some business management courses. Private piano lessons, then selftaught besides.
3. What are your professsional qualifications? For piano? Nothing. My profession is that of a rancher. Keep cattle and horses. Mandarin, well - I have been speaking it all my life, so I suppose this is a profession.
4. What is your experience with children? I'm sixty and have raised one child - Malcolm Reynolds. He survived. There is a little smiley face next to this comment. I also teach Sunday School on a semi-regular basis at home, from ages 10 to 17. Ingress would be my first experience with under ten, but I believe I am up to the task.
5. Please give us three references at Milliways we might contact who would vouch for your character.
Malcolm Reynolds, Captain - He better vouch for me, the brigand. Another smile.
Caspian, Stablemaster - Caspian has been to my home and has bought a horse from me. How a woman treats horses is how a woman treats life.
The crew of Serenity - Can't imagine they'd think I'm too frightening.
Thank you for your consideration.

Dear Tom and Door,
I saw your sign, and while I suspect there are any number of people in the bar who are ever so much more qualified to be either a nanny or a tutor, I wanted to let you know that if you ever need someone to help out, I'd be happy to.
Oh, and if Ingress wants princess lessons, beyond curtseying, I'd be happy to teach her. Just for fun, of course.

There's also a note, at the bottom.
I'm probably not what you're looking for in terms of teaching, though I could probably tutor science. Anytime you want someone to look after Ingress and Gavroche, though, I'd love to help out. We've all met. And I promise you, I know what kind of things new wizards try to get up to.
I'm generally around the bar. A note with Bar should reach me. Or you can ask Gavroche and Kennis, who should be able to contact me.

Mr Riddle,
As there are likely to be any number of applicants in response to your request, I thought it best to leave the competition fully open to those who are most in need of an alternate means of livelihood. However, I am of course more than willing to offer my services should you find yourself in need of a tutor in history or the classical languages. Seeing as how your own magic derives much of its spell-speech from Latin and some from Greek, it might be useful for the children to understand something of how both languages work. Regarding history, I cannot claim that the history of my world is precisely the same as the history found in other worlds, but I am fairly accustomed to working from a more generalised perspective on world events. If naught else, I would be interested in discussing with you any specifics of the children's education, be it the hopes that you and your good lady have for them or their own particular inclinations.
I remain,
M. Lyon

Dear Professor Merriman,
It would be an honor if you'd like to spend your valuable time tutoring my children. Latin and Greek are vital subjects for any thinking person's educational foundation. You might find me taking some of my own time to sit in to refresh my memory.
Would you be able to spend an hour or so per week upon these lessons? Any time you have to spare, we'd appreciate your efforts.
Respectfully,
Tom Riddle
(This letter was written with a great deal of gushing to Door over how excited Tom is to have such an icon of all things magical come to his home to teach his children!)
