Mr. Universe is downstairs, for the first time in a couple of weeks, having got caught up in whatever's the latest thing to catch his interest.

He has his laptop, of course, and is working intently.

"Like the name, more interesting than Wendy. What's the real name? If you don't mind me asking."

Curious, yes. I'm always curious.

He doesn't tell anyone that. Even his mun.

"One I left behind a long time ago", is the only answer she gets, with a disarming smile. "Assuming you don't count the ones I've used to move in the world."

"Well, Mr. Universe is good enough. Better than Bob or Herman or Ronald. It's mysterious, yet a little superhero-ish."

I shrug.

"I like it. That's why I chose it." He grins at her. "What's yours?"

"Wendy. It's somewhat boring and a little too Kansas. But I'm still mysterious all on my own"

So, ok, I used to live in Kansas so it worked. But it's not like I ever fit in there. So, does that really count. I should change it, but I can't.

"Kansas? That's on Earth that Was, right?"

"Yeah, but it doesn't matter anyways, cause I don't live there anymore. I'm a city girl now. New York."

Relief comes with being able to say such things.

He nods, understanding.

"When'd you run out?"

"12 am of my eighteenth birthday."

I smile. I had taken the 12:17 bus to New York. It took me about 15 minutes to walk there.

"You waited to be legal. Admirable patience."

"Well, thanks. And trust me, it was hell."

I smirk.

"Something happen? Or did the boredom just get to you?"

It's just idle curiosity.

"Both and it's all history. A story of death, despair, unacceptance, broken families, and just horrible, close-minded people. That's it, really."

I laugh.

"And quite a story it sounds." He leans back, ignoring the laptop now. "If typical of the human race, from what I've seen."

"Yeah, unfortunetly it is. I won't lie or cover it up. But there are a few people who care. That's guaranteed as well."

"Care about... helping others out? Yes."

"So, I take it, you..are not from Earth."

"Earth's been gone a long long time in my 'verse. We moved up and out."

I smile.

"That's a good way of putting it. Is life better where you are?"

"That would depend on who you are and where you live. The Core planets are a lot like Earth, or so they say."

"Well, you can't expect complete peace. It's a nice dream, nice for this place, but it's not real."

"Not with the humans I know."

"So, music. Is it the same? Still have Black Sabbeth, Dep Leppard and the like?"

"It's been five hundred years", he says casually. "I've made something of a study of Earth-that-Was culture, but your average man on the street? No."

"I make you copies of the tapes I have, and then you can play them for the universe. Dead serious."

I smile.
