Narcissa is downstairs this afternoon, over near the observation window. Pacing. And being, in general, very Not Happy.
This might have something to do with a certain note she read (and destroyed) earlier.
Just maybe.

"My dear."
no subject
"Lucius." Narcissa stops pacing and stands by the window, arms crossed. "What is going on?"
no subject
"The Dark Lord has given me a mission, to prove myself after failing him, and getting placed in Azkaban. He has sent me to dispatch another of our number, who has failed in his mission."

Still, that knowledge does nothing to stop the hollow feeling forming in the pit of her stomach.
"Will it be so difficult?"
no subject
"Not at all. The person in question is not even a full wizard yet, has not graduated from Hogwarts. To kill them would be an easy thing, in and of itself."
He pauses, clears his throat.
"It is said by the Dark Lord that sentiment is the greatest weakness a wizard may posess."
no subject
...please, don't let Father know where I am.
"You won't."
no subject
He finally looks away.
"I should not follow this order. But if I do not, he will kill me."
no subject
"You will not harm our son. How can you even consider such a thing?"
no subject
And it does sound like he means it.
"But I cannot consider disobeying the Dark Lord, either."
no subject
Narcissa resumes pacing. "We'll go away somewhere."
no subject
His hands clasp together.
"Where shall we hide? On our world? He can find us. He has that power. Here? It isn't home. Shall we run, like rats, to find holes on other worlds?"
no subject
"Home isn't, anymore. It hasn't been for months and may never be again."
no subject
A gesture at the door.
"As many of us as show up here, he'll find us."
no subject

"If there were no Dark Lord, there would be no problem."
no subject
Because he has.
"Indeed."
no subject
"I don't know."
no subject
Narcissa kneels beside her husband's chair, a gentle hand on his knee. "We have to figure out a way around it."
no subject
He agrees.
"Perhaps I can tell him simply that Draco is no longer in this world? It is truth."
no subject
"I'm not certain he would."
no subject
And here, he actually manages to find a smile.
"Quite like a young witch I used to know."
Yes, he's talking about her.
no subject
"That could really be either of us."
A brief pause.
"when he comes back, we should all talk about this, the three of us. He needs to know he's not in danger."
no subject
"Of course, my love."
