Mal actually entered the bar an hour ago. I'm sure you saw him walk in and go to the bar to order himself a drink. You may have heard him utter to Bar a short phrase: "I'm bored", and you may have seen him receive a game he did not recognize, along with instructions.

"Rubik's Cube. Huh."

Of course, an hour later and his glass empty, you may be hearing other short phrases coming from Mal's habitual barstool, but I highly doubt they are as PG as "I'm bored".

Raven settles next to him, head tilted, staring at the cube.

"You are fond of bright colors?"

"No. Bright colors are the bane of my gorram existence," Mal grits out, staring at the cube with malicious intent.

"Do you understand this ruttin' thing?"

Raven pokes at it very carefully.

"I do not think it is talking."

"Either that or I don't understand how to listen to it proper."

Mal finally puts down the cube and gestures to sit.

"You and I ain't talked for a spell. Been keepin' busy?"

Purposefully avoidant of direct discussion of leaving and Blodwen and general not-fun-times.

Raven laughs, taking a seat.

"I have managed well enough, I think."

Blink.

"And you? Things go, I am hoping."

"That is a curious device."

The observation comes from an Elven lady, giving both the cube and Mal an inquisitive look.

"It certainly is, miss," Mal looks up from the cube, "and a damned frustratin' one. You're supposed to get all the colors to match up on each face o' the cube, but every time you rotate one, other colors -- get -- in -- the way."

Mal sighs, "'S supposed to be a puzzle, or a game."

"If it frustrates you so, my lord, then why do you continue in your efforts?"

"'Cause the point o' the thing is to succeed even though it's a challenge. Learn a new way o' seeing a difficult problem."

Stop. Backtrack.

"Name's Mal Reynolds. Suppose I should be callin' you 'Lady' then, if you're trying to address someone like me as 'Lord'."

She smiles, inclining her head. "You may, if you so desire. I am Lady Celebrían. Well met, Master Reynolds."

Sheppard recognizes Mal. Perhaps more importantly, he recognizes the hellish little multicolored cube that Mal is in possession of. And so he ambles over, raising an eyebrow as he listens. "They're never as easy as they look. Trust me on that."

"I figured that out about fifteen ruttin' minutes into the gorram thing and yet fortyfive gorram minutes later, the piece of goushi's still got me goin' round in circles."

Mal is much with the cursing, today.

"There's kind of a trick to it," he offers, eyeballing the cube more carefully. "You start out with a corner and go from there." He's familiar with the demon cube.

"Crap."

Mal stares at it.

"I need a drink. Want one? I'll buy if you attempt this ruttin' thing."

"Sure." Sheppard takes a seat, cracking his knuckles. "It's been a couple years, but I think I can do it." He's worked on a puzzle that had the potential to kill him before. How bad could this one be?

"Y'know, there are books you can get that tell you how to solve those things," comments a teen down the bar.

"Where's the fun in that?"

Not that Mal's having a lot of fun at the moment, fumbling with the cube.

She points at the cube. "Where's the fun in that?"

"I...have no idea. Come," Mal invites. "Sit. Distract me from the evil."

A very large purple figure is watching him curiously as he fiddles with the object. Finally curiousity gets the better of him as well as the need to help the seemingly frustrated man out.

Coming up beside him Goliath points at the cube and asks, "What is that?"

"That is a -- " Mal turns to face the origin of the voice beside him.

"...suddenly not worth my attention. Ni hao."

Rubik's Cube = SO not the most unusual thing he's seen all day anymore.

And Goliath smiles and does his best not to look scary, though the man seems to be taking his presence well. Milliways may allow him to approach strangers but he's still quite new at it.

"Hello."

Mal's not scared, oddly enough. Just having a major case of 'Just when I thought I had figured this place out...'

"Um. Do you...uh..."

He asked a question.

"It's a puzzle. Match the colors on all sides?"
