There is a three year old looking up at the one who is obviously SO MUCH OLDER AND WISER.

"Storwy?"

She looks down* at the three-year-old. "Hmm? Story? What story?"

*Pretend the icon is facing downwards.

Because every once in awhile little boys need them, yep.

"...I don't have any stories with me right now." She shrugs apologetically.

"Is 'tay.

What doin' den?"

She grins and shows him the notebook she has on the table in front of her. "Maths." Equations are scrawled on the pages like trails left in sand by the tentacles of a beached octopus.

"What dat?"

"It's algebra." She scribbles down another equation near the bottom right corner of a page. "Can you read? It won't make much sense if you can't."

Harold is a smart three year old! But algebra is a bit beyond him.

He peeers at the equation and concentrates.
"Four 'n nine 'n eight 'n x? ..'n 't'(+)!"

"Yep."

She flips to a new page and writes a new equation:

x + 5 = 8
x = ?

"See, X is the variable, which means it's a number only we don't know which one. Here, since X plus 5 is 8, X has to be 3, because 8 minus 5 is 3."

She erases the ? and writes a 3 instead.

Harold looks at the paper.
Then looks at her.
Then back at the paper.


"Magic!!"

Tilda giggles. "Nope, not magic, just mathematics." She closes the notebook. "So, what's your name? I'm Matilda."

"Hii! I Harold!" Nodnod.

"Nice to meet you, Harold." She solemnly holds out a hand for a handshake.

He looooks at the hand.

Finally he decides to poke it.

Another giggle.

"No, no. It's not for poking. Haven't you ever shaken hands with someone before?"

"Oh. Well, it's what adults do when they meet each other." She shrugs. "I guess it is a bit weird."

She giggles.

"It looks silly, too."

There's a thoughtful pause.
"Hungwy."

"Me too. I'd really like a waffle."

She looks at Bar and sighs.

"But I think Bar has been crying, and all the food she gives out is salty. So I can't have good waffles from her right now."
