Sara has coffee, a casefile, a metal rod, and a small jar of red powder.

"...God, you weren't kidding when you said this crap got everywhere."

"Don't rag on me about my work habits and I won't rag on you."

"Yes, ma'am." He smiles, good naturedly, but there's a bit of a sheepish manner to his expression as well.

"I win," she smirks.

Mark grumbles. It might be something about beating him through the back door. "You're not getting out of coming to New York, though." He makes a mental note to keep her occupied, and perhaps just accidentally keep her from those case files.

"Let me see what I can arrange at the lab."

"Take your time. Just don't forget about it." He grins. "New York's not going anywhere." Poor boy doesn't know what's going to happen in a couple years.

"I'll take your word for it."

She's not going to say anything.

Mark shrugs. "It's Manhattan. It doesn't really change, just gets dirtier and smoggier. It's still home, though."

"I should make you go to San Francisco sometime. That city's like that for me."

"I've only been to the west coast once, and that was to Los Angeles for the Oscars. And really I didn't do an awful lot of sightseeing when I was there."

"There's more to the West Coast than just Hollywood, despite what Entertainment Tonight tries to tell people."

"Oh, I'm sure there is. And it's probably a lot better than Holy Wood, too, even though that's not saying much." He shrugs. "I should probably do some travelling. Would be interesting."

"It'd probably be a good thing for you to do."

"It would." He shrugs. "I'm really just a kid from Scarsdale who happened to get a camera and have a dream. So, I don't know an awful lot about the country. I should."

"I've traveled a fair bit for conferences and the like. The US really is a beautiful country once you get away from the idiots."

Mark sighs. "The idiots are everywhere, if you believe the postmarks on my hate mail." He shrugs. "They seem to congregate in the Midwest, though, and sometimes the South."

"You'll find bigotry everywhere, but it seems more rampant in rural areas. It's such a waste."

"People with closed minds shouldn't open their mouths. At the very least they shouldn't send harassing mail to people who they happen to disagree with. I swear I could heat the Loft with the mail I get."

"I actually received criticism from some of the religious leaders in Vegas regarding the outcome of the hate crime case I had a while back. Apparently I should have focused on God's children." Her tone goes sour. "And yet I get asked why I don't like organized religion, among other such questions."

Mark shakes his head. "Most organized religion is much more trouble than its worth." He shrugs. "They act self-righteous, when they're actually just a bunch of hypocrites." Oh, he's not bitter. Not at all.

"And how people use religion to manipulate governmental policy is disgusting. I'm sorry--our government officials swear to uphold the Constitution, not the goddamned Bible."

Sara isn't bitter either. This isn't the cynicism you're looking for.

"Exactly. There are a hell of a lot of people in America who aren't Christian, people. Please don't force your views on the rest of us." He shrugs. "I'm Jewish. On feast days."

"My parents weren't religious. I have a god and a little goddess in my family, as well as two others for friends." She shrugs.

Mark shrugs as well. "I really don't give a flying fuck. People are people, no matter what the believe. I just don't want anyone else telling me what to believe. They're welcome to think that I'm wrong, but they can just keep their fat traps shut."

That makes Sara laugh. "Concisely put. I like that."
