Last Saturday, Owen Davies drove Bran to the Machynlleth train station. Since then he has been working very hard indeed on the farm, and volunteering more than usual at chapel. David and Jen Evans had him to dinner three times, and John Rowlands has been a great support, and there has been plenty of work to do.

At night, though, when Owen comes home, leading Lluchddu into the house, the little cottage is far too still.

If anything, Owen is relieved when he finds Milliways at the other side of his bedroom door.

"Were you?" Owen jerks his chin up and makes himself focus on Moiraine. "How long ago, now?"

"A few weeks," the Aes Sedai replies tranquilly. "Three or more, but not much more, as time is reckoned here, I do not think."

"Then he has not been back," Owen says, mostly to himself. More clearly, he adds, "He left for university on Saturday."

"I see." Her tone remains calm, but it is far from unkind.

"I have not seen him since his departure, no."

Owen nods.



"Very quiet at home, these days."

"I can see that it would be," Moiraine says quietly.

"When one is used to another's presence in the pattern of one's days, their absence leaves an emptiness that is hard to fill."

Owen shakes his head. "Seventeen years, now, since I lived alone." In those days, he'd had a different cottage, in the hills over on Prichard's farm.
