Wells has been busy at the Academy most of the day- small surprise. Some of the girls are coming up on being field-ready. That's a critical p hase in their training, and he doesn't want to see it go awry now.

It does mean that he's been forced to keep up with the reflexes and endurance of Slayers for twelve or fourteen hours now, though, so he reckons he's earned dinner and a pint by the fire.

"Eh, I save it for my daughter and granddaughter. They need it more," says Wells with a shrug.

Then he smiles. "Are you kidding? It was Giles himself who rang me up and asked me to do the job. Said they needed the help, what with there bein' so many girls and all."

"Giles acting sensibly. I really should find a way to commemorate the occasion."

"The Council and I have never been on the best of terms, regardless of who's in charge of it. Though I must admit, Giles' direction would be more preferable to me than that of his predecessors."

"Mm. I dunno if he'd have gone for the idea if it weren't for Andrew," says Wells. "I keep havin' to duck that Harkness witch trying to corner me and ask about my condition. Too fucking curious by half, that woman."

Wesley thinks for a moment, then nods. "Ah, yes, I remember her now. She was never one for knowing her limits, as I recall. So she's been promoted then?"

"I can't imagine they have an especially deep bench these days."

"She was on the Council when I testified on Andrew's behalf, yeah," says Wells. "Long story there. The short version is that there were papers at Gruinard Island that had my government ready to move against the Council 'cos they thought they were doin' something involving breeding and training vampires or some such. Council wanted to know how Andrew got those papers, and since that was through me-" He shrugs. "She was on the team when I got there, that's all I know."

"Well, the inner workings of the Council are hardly my concern anymore."

Except... my father....

Wesley mentally shrugs off that thought.

"I trust the last remnants of the Gruinard Island experiments have been dealt with?"

"Put to the torch for the most part," says Wells. "Those giant dogs they were breeding- I've still got the files on those, and Cooper and Zuko've got the pups they rescued, but otherwise, yeah."

"Good."

Wesley pauses. He was going to avoid the matter, but given Wells' responsibilities....

"I should point out that my father, Roger Wyndham-Pryce, may yet be a member of your world's Council. If that's the case--should he ever approach you for some reason, I would be especially cautious about putting your trust in him."

Wells frowns a little, thinking. "Can't say I've ever seen him," he says at last. "Andrew'd've given me the name if nothing else."

"It's possible he met some other fate in your world."

"You'd be the better off for it."

Up goes the eyebrow. "One of those, eh?"

He's beginning to wonder if he's the only man here whose dad wasn't a complete fucking arsehole.

"A little trouble of him casually putting me into near-fatal situations for his own personal gain, yes."

"It's the sort of thing one finds it hard to simply let pass."

"Mm," says Wells. "I can imagine. My dad-"

He hesitates, and finally shakes his head. "Eh. Doesn't matter. I'd be pretty fucking pissed if my dad pulled that sort of shit."

"Well, I've come to expect it."

"I'm more concerned at this point with making sure others know what they might be getting into. My father has a genuine talent for bringing harm down on others."

Wesley, one might say, came by it honestly.
