It's always a complicated process, trying to jibe the various timelines he has to deal with, but Charlie's determined. This is his third Milliways-based Lent, and he's not going to let it slide just because it's summer in San Diego. Sometimes a bloke needs a time of contemplation and discipline. Even this bloke.

So. Doorway in from California early this morning, out to Las Vegas for Mass, and back to the Bar again.

For a guy with ashes on his forehead, he looks pretty peaceful.

His headache will probably start to fade after a little bit. "Oui! I spent de entire week readin'. Mos'ly history. . .One about Countess Bathory was especially good."

She's not smiling, but her expression isn't nearly as dark.

Belle takes a deep breath. "She was a Hungarian countess. Given her own castle 'n' land when she married, mainly because her husband spent most of his time at war. So she had a lot o' social functions, t' keep her occupied, when she wasn't takin' care o' her county.

"She was vain, 'n' worried about gettin' old, since de only thing she had t' enjoy was parties. She tried all sorts o' cosmetics 'n' stuff, t' get rid o' flaws she might or might not have had.

"One day she was havin' her hair brushed by one o' her younger servant girls. De girl kept pullin' her hair, so Bathory beat the young girl bloody. Some o' de blood got on Bathory, 'n' she thought it made her skin look younger.

"The next obvious step was t' kill most o' de daughters in de county, t'make herself eternally young. Some say she killed over 600 girls before she was stopped. As punishment she was sealed int' a tower, where she was held by herself until her death."
