Jim is writing something. Erasing. Writing. It's very easy to write and erase and write when you have a PADD. Getting the words right? That's not so easy.

Maybe Jim won't mind if you interrupt.

Jim raises an eyebrow, appreciating the questions even as he wishes he could elude them.

"When David was born, we had begu the long, painful process of not being in love. So I'm not sure it has much to do with him. Though her role as the mother of my son does come into play, I'm sure.

"As for Carol being there...it's true that I saw her more recently. And that there was a part of me that wanted to be with her simply because we could. That might play a role as well.

"But she's...you know, I don't know where she is now. The Vulcans routed the subspace call for me when I told her about David. But she's not on Earth, or Vulcan."

"So you loved her, then you lost her, then you found out that she'd had your child, then she left and you don't know where she is." Suzi is just making sure that this is clear, "And during the course of a stressful and horrible situation you think you may have fallen in love with her?"

"The last part is accurate. The rest...

"Well, I knew about David. She asked me to stay away more thna once, and it didn't quite take till I was given my command. Even back then, I managed to find complications." He smiles ruefully. "And I was quite aware of her life. She is quite the innovator as a scientist."

She tilts her head and says, "But does that mean the same thing as knowing her?"

He shakes his head. "Nom it doesn't. I can't really say I ever did know her.

"But Antonia..." His smile is now warm and genuine. "On our best days, I think she understood a lot about me, and me about her."

"Well. You can't love someone you don't know." The Sime says quite seriously, "So I'd say that before breaking up with Antonia you go back home and start dating her all over again, just like you did at the beginning. You'll know then. Now is the wrong time to be thinking about it."

"So...don't write the letter?" He's been listening. It's a lot to think about. But sometimes, it's easiest to sum things up in one action, or lack thereof.

"Write a letter." She says wryly, "But write a letter that says I've missed you, make reservations at a restaurant we like instead of one that says anything about marriage or ending the relationship."

"I wasn't going to talk about eithe rof those in the letter. Give me more credit than that. I...I just feel like I need to explain why I haven't contacted her. Though I'm not sure I really can.

"And while that is a good idea, I can't say Starfleet is going to let me take her out for the night when we get home."

"Then do tell her about what happened." She says quietly, "But tell her that things were busy, not about Carol. And if Starfleet won't let you...well, tell her you want to take her out, but you might not be able to."

"That is a good idea." Jim, the words finally coming, starts writing. Suzi might notice that he uses it as if it's a piece of paper, and that the PADD can apparently read his handwriting.

She beams at him, leaning forward to kiss his cheek, "Then I'll leave you to that, and I'll talk to you later."

"Thanks." He beams, and then gests to his task.
