(no subject)

Ah so, here is the recovering alcoholic hippie, in the bar, at a booth, with real food. Yeah, totally. He's eating it very, very slowly, but he does have what appears to be a ham sandwich. And tea.

And a really big, really old book, compliments of Nearly Wristless Rod Roderick Usher.

He is also playing with a spoon, twirling it in one hand lazily.

Please annoy.

"Not better than Strawberry Fields Forever, I hope!"

She has a real soft spot for that song.

"Daddy danced with me to that song," she says quietly, sounding very young all of the sudden.

It's really her only completely good memory of her father.

April closes her eyes and listens, her head resting on Miniver's shoulder and a slightly wistful smile playing about her lips.

"That's very pretty."

Home's home. As miserable as she was, even April misses it sometimes. She slips her hand into his and squeezes lightly. "I do too, sometimes."

"I barely had any either. Miranda was the youngest, and she was seventeen when I was born." She grins brightly at him, and this is literally the happiest you're going to see her about anything that's not related to Boromir.

There's a brief pause.

"I married a trucker? Why the hell did you let me marry a trucker, Miniver?"

In other words (as obvious by the big grin and sparkling eyes), she'd love that.

"We-ell... It sorta depends on whether or not you age here when you're dead, I guess. I usually say 23, 'cause that's how old I'd be if you do. If not, I'm still 21. And in my defense, he was very romantic. For a trucker."

"Why shouldn't we be?" April asks rather excitedly. "I mean, I'm dead, right? And it's only been two years since then for me, but it's been nearly five for Mark and everybody. Time works weirdly. It's all a matter of when Bar brings you in!"

Beat.

"He bought me tulips, okay? He went to an actual floral shop and got me my favorite flowers. I was blown away by the thoughtfulness."

"I haven't met him yet."

There are big grins in this booth.

"I always wanted a little brother. I'm about 25 minutes older, by the way."

The 30 year difference means nothing here. She can't leave and he's not planning to (any time soon, at least), and the only thing that matters is that they were soulmates anyway.

"Y'know? This place rules," April declares, cuddling her brother (yay, brother!) tightly. "Because... we never would've found each other otherwise." He probably would've been dead before she was out of diapers.

Well, not exactly, since all three of her siblings were already born when he got here. But the picture is vivid.

April twines her arms around his neck and just... cuddles.

"What took you so long?" she whispers.

The youngest was born in 1956.

Yeah, I think they were born.

"Mmm. You always did have a terrible sense of direction."

"Only the interesting people," April corrects. Then laughs.

"I think we might be slightly insane, d'ya know that?"

"A bit," she nods. "In middle school, mostly. He's not my favorite - too dark."

Beat.

"Wait, wait, is this Roderick Usher from The House of Usher?"
