(no subject)

She had thought that getting away from the flat would help make matters better.

It didn't.

At this moment, she doubted anything could make it all right again.

It's a tell that Sarah Jane is upset over something when, instead of sitting on the sofa by the fire, she's on the floor and leaning against it as she clutches her knees to her chest. Her eyes are open, alert, as she gazes into the flames.

Thinking.

Lots and lots of thinking.

YT knows there's something wrong with this woman. Sometimes you can just tell. She's sitting on the floor, legs and arms drawn in like she's trying to make herself as small as possible, and even when YT comes within two feet of her on her way to the couch, the woman gives no sign of noticing. Not a look, not a twitch of the head, nothing.

Putting her oatmeal and orange juice down on the end table by the couch, YT walks around Sarah Jane so that she's right in her two o'clock position, not directly in front of her, but quite prominently within her field of vision. YT lowers herself down into a kneeling position, so that the two of them will be eye-level to each other. "Hey." YT absently pushes a stray lick of hair behind her ear. "Are you okay?"

Because with this place being what it is, the woman could be hypnotized or enchanted or something. Best to check.

"Looks like you were doing a lot of thinking," YT remarks. She has a somewhat disconcerting habit of not simply playing along with little white lies. "Probably more than's healthy for you. And you'll give yourself a cramp sitting like that." God, she's turning into her mother. Or someone's mother, anyway - YT's mother doesn't really pester her all that much, and hasn't for years.

"It's not always, 'cause there's different kinds," YT says. "there's the straight-on, smart kind, which most people don't do nearly enough of. And then there's the runaround thinking people do to avoid the straight-on kind, which everyone does way, way too much of." YT's had a lot of experience getting her friend Hiro out of the going-nowhere second kind.

Sarah Jane Smith? That name sounds so bland and normal that it loops around into weird from the opposite side.

"YT," she says, accepting the offered handshake. Since the kneeling position is getting uncomfortable, she scoots around so she's sitting next to (but not uncomfortably close to) Sarah Jane, with her back against the couch. But she's more relaxed about it, with only one leg drawn up and the other sticking out.

"How much of your name do I actually say? Like, is it just Sarah, or Sarah Jane?" She honestly doesn't think that the correct answer might be 'Miss Smith.'

Most people around here don't ask that. "It means Yours Truly," she says. "Like the way some people sign letters. But mostly it just stands for me." And she goes by it pretty much exclusively. Only two people in the bar know the name on her birth certificate and neither of them are allowed to use it.

It's not that Jim knows women so well that one look can tell him what's wrong with them. But as a captain and then as an instructor, he's not bad at knowing when people are in a mood of some sort.

So he puts aside his intent to read a few more personnel reports for the time being, as soon as he sees Sarah Jane.

"Hello. You need to talk about it?"

"It's your choice. But I've seen that face a number of times in my travels. Normally, I'd suggest such a face go to a counselor, or at least Dr. McCoy. But since they aren't here..." And he might suggest Suzi, only she's been elsewhere of late.

"I'm getting that a lot lately in here. Try me, if you want." He gives her a comforting smile.

He's quiet for a moment. He pulls up a chair. His face is quite serious.

"You and James...and you weren't planning it..."

Seymour has been trying to distract himself from thinking - hence, the Walkman playing rock 'n' roll and his trying to read To Kill a Mockingbird. Every once and a while he looks up from his spot on the couch by the fire, and one of those times he notices Sarah Jane.

And goes back to reading, sneaking glances at her that look more and more guilty every minute.

Friends don't let friends brood alone. Or, they do, but at least they make sure they want to be alone.

So he clears his throat, slips the earplugs out of his ears, and tentatively says, "Hi."

[identity profile] skidrowseymour.livejournal.com 2007-05-04 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, you know," and a short shrug is her non-answer. He's not important.

"How've you been?" he asks carefully.

Woah. That's clever. How will Seymour deal with this startling turn of events?

He blinks, and adjusts his glasses with Band-Aid covered fingers. "I'm sorry. Maybe things'll get less 'you know' soon?"

[identity profile] skidrowseymour.livejournal.com 2007-05-04 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I hope so too," Seymour replies, with a more certain nod.

It'd still be nice if he knew what the situation was. He considers asking further as he watches her. He needs a moment or two to gather his courage - if he has any.
