She had thought that getting away from the flat would help make matters better.
It didn't.
At this moment, she doubted anything could make it all right again.
It's a tell that Sarah Jane is upset over something when, instead of sitting on the sofa by the fire, she's on the floor and leaning against it as she clutches her knees to her chest. Her eyes are open, alert, as she gazes into the flames.
Thinking.
Lots and lots of thinking.

Putting her oatmeal and orange juice down on the end table by the couch, YT walks around Sarah Jane so that she's right in her two o'clock position, not directly in front of her, but quite prominently within her field of vision. YT lowers herself down into a kneeling position, so that the two of them will be eye-level to each other. "Hey." YT absently pushes a stray lick of hair behind her ear. "Are you okay?"
Because with this place being what it is, the woman could be hypnotized or enchanted or something. Best to check.

Sarah looks up at the woman, somewhat surprised that anyone would even notice her here. It's not a bad thing though. Sometimes conversation is a wonderful distraction.
She forces a smile on her face and nods, lying. "Oh, I'm fine. Just doing some thinking."

Sarah Jane and James can use more thinking in their lives. Much more thinking.

It's what gets her into situations like this, isn't it?
She shrugs, offering a hand. "Sarah Jane Smith."

"YT," she says, accepting the offered handshake. Since the kneeling position is getting uncomfortable, she scoots around so she's sitting next to (but not uncomfortably close to) Sarah Jane, with her back against the couch. But she's more relaxed about it, with only one leg drawn up and the other sticking out.
"How much of your name do I actually say? Like, is it just Sarah, or Sarah Jane?" She honestly doesn't think that the correct answer might be 'Miss Smith.'

Just as long as it isn't SJ. She detests that name.
"What does YT stand for?"

So he puts aside his intent to read a few more personnel reports for the time being, as soon as he sees Sarah Jane.
"Hello. You need to talk about it?"
no subject
"I don't know."

"I don't think a counselor can help much with this," Sarah replies. "It's... well, it's complicated."

There. She's said it outloud again and it's just as scary as last night and that feeling won't go away.
She wants all of this to go away so much though.

"You and James...and you weren't planning it..."
no subject
It's been a fast relationship. But that doesn't mean it needs to continue at that pace.

And goes back to reading, sneaking glances at her that look more and more guilty every minute.
Friends don't let friends brood alone. Or, they do, but at least they make sure they want to be alone.
So he clears his throat, slips the earplugs out of his ears, and tentatively says, "Hi."

"Hello Seymour," she answers, trying to make the smie bigger. "How have you been?"
no subject
"How've you been?" he asks carefully.

He blinks, and adjusts his glasses with Band-Aid covered fingers. "I'm sorry. Maybe things'll get less 'you know' soon?"
no subject
Is it horrible of her that she hopes so? She still doesn't know.
no subject
It'd still be nice if he knew what the situation was. He considers asking further as he watches her. He needs a moment or two to gather his courage - if he has any.
no subject
"Thank you."
