(no subject)

Suzi Darley has a pad of paper, several pens, and a booth where she can keep an eye on the bar in general. Her knitting and her usual signs offering jewelry for sale are nowhere in sight.

She's here for one reason: initial interviews with the people who requested them. Her notes will be passed along above her head, and those people will sit down and figure out who they want to talk to more from there.

She's got the list of questions that Alanna used in the last hire written down to use (and blank space under them in case anyone on Security has other questions that they want her to start adding), and plans to file each days interviews as soon as they're all finished so that they're to hand for the people doing the actual hires.

"Yes ma'am. Name's J.C. Denton - I signed the sheet a couple of days ago." He was also limping kind of badly at the time, but he's perfectly fine now.

J.C. slides into the seat across from Suzi. "My full name's Jacob Carl Denton," he says. "No titles."

"I don't have one right now. I used to be a special agent for the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition." Since he's not sure how familiar Suzi is with Earth, he asks, "Do you know about the U.N.?"

J.C. takes a few moments to think about that. "The United Nations is an organization on Earth, started in the mid-twentieth century. It's a diplomatic institution - different Earth governments send ambassadors to meet and negotiate about trade, humanitarian aid and international law. They also employ peacekeeping forces, including UNATCO, which deals with terrorist organizations." They might both be past-tense by now. Or if not, they will be soon, as of the point when he left his own world and ended up here.

That's kind of a long list. J.C. decides to start with the non-lethal stuff. "Police baton, electric stun prod, and a miniature crossbow with tranquilizer darts." Then on to the more serious stuff. "I can also use a combat knife, various small firearms, shuriken and a short sword, although I'm not too good at the last. I'm also good with shotguns, sniper rifles, automatic weapons and explosives, but I don't think those would be good for this kind of work, ma'am." Almost as an afterthought, he adds, "I also have black belts in judo and jiu-jitsu."

"Magic? No, ma'am. I do have enhanced strength, stamina, and reflexes." He says this without a hint of boasting. "Also visual modes that let me see beyond the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum." In other words, infrared and x-ray vision.

J.C. counts off on his fingers. "No violence in the main bar, no sex or nudity, and no outside business." There's also the one about pretending not to recognize people out of fiction, but he's not sure if that one's official and it's certainly not a security matter.

"I'm Bound here," J.C. says, "and I don't just want to sit around. I want to do something useful, and this is it. This is what I was trained for, what I know and what I want to do." J.C. has some deeper and more complex reasons for wanting to do this kind of work in the first place, but some of them are deeply personal and others he is not quite able to articulate.

"Don't have any now. What I used to do varied, but it was always aimed at thwarting terrorists. I'd rescue hostages, defuse explosives, get into areas held by enemy forces and take them out, or sometimes just do investigative work to track them down. I'm used to close-quarters combat and keeping civilians out of danger." He might've done better with the word 'noncombatants,' but he's used to 'civilians.'

J.C. blinks, a little bewildered. "I think we did that one already, ma'am. That was the question before last."

"No, ma'am." Neither the good kind nor the bad kind.

"I would try to get between him and the person he's threatening and ask him to calm down," J.C. begins. "I'd let him know that carrying a grudge in the bar and doing anything violent there are against the rules and that Security enforces the rules - if he's too new to know that already, ma'am. Otherwise it would just be a reminder.

"Either way I'd let him know that he would be getting himself in a lot of trouble if he did anything reckless. I'd only use physical force and attempt to relieve him of his weapon if he didn't listen to reason, and I'd get him to concentrate on me - not anyone else." He'd be risking his own safety there, but that would be his job.

"Yes, ma'am. I have nanomechanical augmentations." He points to the circuit nodes at his temples and neck, and also holds out his silver-traced left hand. "Microscopic machines that give me enhanced abilities. I doubt it's going to cause a problem, but they should know." If he wants to work for Security, he should be honest about that. "That's it, ma'am."
