Before moonrise, long before, just pretend this was posted earlier if you're into that kind of thing, Spoon was in the bar with a small supper, a pot of tea, and a book.

He's finding it hard to concentrate on the book, but he's giving it his best shot.

For his part, he's still looking more than a little bit sulky.

Sam heads across the bar, and pauses by the lake door to read the sign on it.

"Full moon." Spoon says when the movement by the door catches his eye, "Fuckin' Ryan is gonna be out there, and he's bad fuckin' news. Got about five hours to moonrise, though.

"I don't think we've met."

Blandly, but Sam turns to look at Spoon with interest.

"He's the bastard that got himself, da', and me infected. Cooper killed him." and if that doesn't make Spoon smile, nothing will, "And I damn near ate him first time I saw him here, beat the shite out of him the second."

He's smiling, but he's still looking more-or-less at his book.

Sam's eyeing him carefully.

Spoon looks up at that and says, "Because of him I spent a year and a half being used for fun games like how many people with fully automatic weapons does it take to knock the werewolf unconscious and Dr. Pretlow's Personal Sadistic Funtime Games. I'm not going to regret fuckin' with Ryan, and the only reason I don't still do it is da' asked me not to make the tentacle woman upset."

"Didn't say you should," Sam points out.

"No, but you're putting out wary scent." Spoon says, "So I'm pointing out that it's him, specifically, not people in general. I don't pull that shite on people. I even kill my VDTs as fast as possible."

"VDTs?"

"And as for anything wary..." Sam shrugs. "Call it cautious, and don't take it personally. There's a lot of things that could get me to react like that."

A small supper, a pot of tea, a book, a chocolate milkshake (with chocolate bits in!) and a kitten.

The last of these articles are snuggled against Spoon. She might be making the reading more difficult.

You know, Spoon's alright with that. He really is. "Hallo, love." he says quietly, nuzzling her cheek.

"Hullo. Good book?" Ace asks, peering at the pages.

"Not really." Spoon says, setting it down. It's a mathematics book, one of the ones he's doing as he gets his education back. "But part of the whole thing, innit?"

"Yup." She kisses his cheek, "Very dutiful, that. Never much cared for maths."

And then she went and studied maths for fifty years. Some things are just inevitable.

"I don't mind it." Spoon informs her, "Like you better, though. What would you think if I went back to school? Part-time, like?"

"I think it's a good idea. S'easier, sometimes, than learnin' on y'own. Helps y'find the important stuff." Ace encourages, grinning. "I promise not t'argue with history teachers."

"Good, love. Because I need to learn what we have." He moves his fag and kisses her cheek, "I'd like to."

"No puppies?"

It seems like a good time to have your array of puppies around. Brian's somewhat surprised at the lack of moral support.

"Sleeping off an overdose of goat." Spoon says mildly, "Hallo, lad."

"Overdose?" Brian eyes the topic and decides it's harmless enough. "How did that work?"

"They gorged themselves until their bellies are like balloons." he laughs, faintly, "And have been sleeping all day. Didn't feel like carrying around a puppy which might respond to being moved by throwing up on me."

"So what's the book?" Another neutral topic! Much better than so, I nearly hit your adopted father figure with a wastegate for poking that sore spot you kicked open and ripping on my driving while he was at it.

Spoon would just laugh at that, honestly. Like Brian could hurt da', hah! "Mathematics. Still getting back everything lost while I was at Gruniard." His voice is very calm, "Thinking about going back to school, maybe."

Yeah, and then it might get into the guy's a jackass, seriously and it'd all be full of doom.

"Oh, yeah?" He settles down comfortably, sort of folding his limbs in and glancing at the book. "What level? I know the British system's pretty different. . ."

"University." Spoon says seriously, "I was there for a time before I joined the army. Wanted to be a teacher after I got out. Isn't going to happen now, but I wanted to once."
