Sarah Jane is surprised to receive gifts from Bar when she enters Milliways today. In the midst of worrying about James and dealing with Valerie's impending arrival, she had forgotten to go shopping for her friends here.

Still, it seems, people didn't forget about her. There's candy from Wes and flowers from Steed and perhaps most surprising of all are the gifts from John Byers.

So, she's currently sitting at a table, playing with the stuffed dog. It's for Valerie, but Sarah Jane is easily amused.

"Hey." Knox spots Sarah Jane. He looks a little uncomfortable.

As Sarah looks up, she immediately takes on a look of awkwardness herself.

Quietly, "Hello, Alex."

"So...er...I really overstepped my bounds the last time we talked, didn't I?" No point it beating around the bush.

Sarah Jane shrugs, not quite meeting his eyes.

"I... well... I wasn't quite in the best frame of mind then, Alex."

"Understood. And I guess I was just being the hard-nosed reporter instead of just a friend. Which isn't to say that I shouldn't be worried. But there are better ways to show it. I hope." He half-smiles.

"There are," she says quietly, stealing a glance up at him. "Thank you."

"Tell you what. You talk, I listen. And I let you run your own life?" He pulls up a seat.

She smiles softly. Sarah likes that idea a lot.

But.

"Sadly, that's what got me into this mess in the first place."

He goes quiet, trying to figure out how to respond and not start the whole thing again.

"And how are things now?"

"I think you should name him Rupert."

"Rupert?"

Sarah Jane beams at Byers, carefully standing to give him a hug.

"Thank you, John."

He smiles, hugging her back.

"You're welcome. I hope Valerie will like them as much as you do."

"I'm certain they will. They are, after all, her first Christmas presents outside of her family."

"Are they?"

Byers looks rather pleased with himself.

Sarah nods, placing a hand on her belly.

"Only James and I have brought her gifts yet. Thank you."

"You're welcome," he says, grinning. "I wasn't sure what to get. I had Frohike help me out."

Because Frohike knows EVERYTHING about kids, yep.

And now he gets a kiss on the cheek.

"It's perfect."

"Aren't you a little too old to play with stuffed toys?"

Bond has had to talk himself into just approaching her. Still too afraid of what might happen.

"It was a Christmas gift," she explains as she raises her eyebrows. "From a friend- to Valerie."

"And you're just...testing it out for her," he replies, slowly starting to smirk.

"It's name is Rupert," she answers with a hint of indignation. "And yes. I see nothing wrong with that."

"Okay."

He places his hand on the back of a chair. "May I sit?"

Sarah nods. After all, what did they discuss the other day if not being friends?

"Certainly."

Bond sits. And promptly doesn't know what else to do.

He'd much rather observe her from a distance. For some reason, he can't seem to stay away.

It's okay. Sarah Jane happens to be very good with small talk.

She smiles, placing the toy dog down and picking up something more respectable to finger: the earrings.

"And how are you doing, James?"
