That is one fine wheelchair; all smoky green titanium alloys and gleaming wheels. It's not a racing chair, but it's comfortable and responsive and has a good turn of speed even under no more power than its occupant's good right arm.

Which is what powers it now, through the door and into the bar.

Said occupant is pushing forty, minimum, but still very beautiful. She's decidedly casual--unmade up, fresh enough from the bath to be still damp, and wearing an oversized t-shirt that proclaims I Drink NOZZ-A-LA and a pair of pinned up jeans.

Tonight Susannah Toren is unarmed; and just like every night for twenty years and more, she's in a more basic way unlegged, too. She looks happy enough to be here. There may be opiates back in Casa Toren, against her better judgment, but there's no booze, and she could maybe use a drink.

"What is Nozz-a-la?"

X's voice comes from Susannah's left. And not from behind, either.

X is not that foolish--and she could not have seen the shirt logo if she had approached from that direction.

Susannah smiles, wryly. "It is a supremely nasty cola drink. In the world I live in now, it beat out Pepsi back in the Stone Ages. Tastes like nutmeg and antifreeze, to my walk-in tongue, but the natives swear by it."

"Hello, sugar."

Sugar? X adds that to the stable of names she will answer to (including Laura, X, and Joe), and moves on.

"Hello."

Beat.

"Walk-in?"

"Somebody who has wandered into the wrong world," she explains. "Not an invader, just a... walk-in. Somebody who made a wrong turn on a strange road."

X tilts her head a little, eyes narrowing.

"You are a time-traveler?"

X is, it would seem, thinking of the wrong kind of world.

"That, too," she agrees, calmly. "I was born in 19--well, 19neveryoumind, but I'm not as old as I ought to be, is my point. But the main thing is I was born then in a different America than the one I live in now. One where they drank Coca-Cola and drove Fords instead of Takuro Spirits."

"My world has Coca-Cola. And Fords."

Because that is so relevant right now.

"Did you go there from here?"

Does that mean she might leave and never see her friends again?

That would be--upsetting.

Kaylee's half-asleep in a chair by the fire. She does open her eyes and glance up periodically.

When she sees Susannah roll in, though, she sits up and takes notice.

"Hey, sugar!" Susannah waves. "Believe I owe you a drink."

Kaylee waves back, and gets up. "Maybe might could, yeah." With a smile. "Good to see you back around."

Sitting at the Bar is a bit of a hurdle for Susannah, so she holds up a finger to halt a rat. "Dragonfly, and--" and glances at Kaylee for her order.

"...whiskey, straight up?" Tentatively.

"You heard the lady." The rat chirrups at them, and scurries off where-ever rats go; Susannah parks herself at a table.

"It's been just about a month for me. That match up?"

It's the wheelchair that catches Charlie's attention, and the woman that holds it.

... well, this is a little awkward.

For gunslingers, it seems, awkwardness is something that happens to other people. "Charlie. Evening."

Charlie manages a smile -- it's not that she has any discomfort with Susannah as such, it's that she's running into her entire company's boss lady at a bar. And she's wearing jeans.

... Well, they're both wearing jeans.

"Evening. How's it going?"

"I slept for thirty hours," she says. "I've been living in the hospital and sleeping sitting in this damn chair, and when I got home I just slept the sun around."

"So, not bad."

"That sounds ... pretty close to heaven," Charlie admits.

"Heaven was the bath I took when I woke up."

Susannah's entrance catches the attention of a young woman with hair and skin as white as hers is black.

It's not so much the unlegged state that catches Kitai's eye as it is the contraption that the woman is using to deal with said state. It is functional and elegant, and far beyond the limited engineering skills of the Marat.

Not that they would ever have need of such a thing, of course.

White people have been staring at Susannah for a long, long time. She tries not to let it interfere with her cocktails.

When she and her Dragonfly are parked at a table, she gives the other woman a nod.

"Were your legs taken in battle?" Kitai asks the same way she does everything -- bluntly. There is no word in the Marat tongue for 'tact'.

"I can't imagine why that would be any of your damn business," she answers coolly.

Kitai blinks, but otherwise gives no sign of offense at the response.

"Would a question about your chair be less distressing for you?" she asks instead.
