Little boy, at a table with his homework, eating a big plate of paradoxes.

Nothing abnormal about this kid.

Except this is a place where everything is pretty gosh darn abnormal.

Let this kid know he needs to work on his ability to blend in.

"Hey, Tyler," says Ray, whose idea of blending in involves hiding in the library and not coming out until the janitor's gone home. "How's it going?"

"Pretty good... the usual weirdness. I had to teach Malphast about Valentine's Day and what it was about." Tyler replies, smiling and setting his homework aside.

For your information it was mostly about sending candy to friends. Tyler emphasized the candy portion for many reasons.

"Malphast," Ray says. "I'm trying to remember. Which one is that again?"

He adjusts the sling that dangles from one shoulder. It's the kind that carries a load, not the kind that holds an arm or anything.

"He's the kid whose mom and dad are a demon general and an angel of order, respectively. And he's the kid who accidentally summoned a tentacle monster in the locker-vator when he listened to a Weird Al cd."

"Oh, right, you mentioned him once," Ray says. "Although the tentacle monster's new, from what I remember. You guys get that cleaned up okay?"

"Actually, the grownups never caught it. It likes to run around the elevator system and grab kids and then toss them out of the elevator. We got the marshmellow monster he summoned when Cecil invited him over for Halloween taken care of though." Tyler grins. "What's new in your world?"

"Hopefully it doesn't get anybody hurt in the process," says Ray, who lives with enough weird things that a tentacle monster that doesn't eat people seems like just another denizen of the walls. "Oh- we've got a new sentient species in our oceans, as it happens. Or rather, we've made contact with at least one. They seemed to indicate that there were multiple species gathered under one political umbrella, if I read their communications properly."

"...like than the Deep Ones?" Tyler replies after a momentary pause. "Are they friendly?"

"They're friendly, but they're nothing at all like the Deep Ones," Ray says. "They're... well, they're octopi. Extremely deep-water octopi, from a species most people don't even know exists. They can't come into the air and they can only stand to be in the surface waters for a very short time, but they've learned human writing thanks to all the printed matter that humanity's dropped in the oceans over the years. They live in the Pacific and they've never met the Deep Ones."

Juuuust give the kid a few moments to process that. Ray's world is so weird sometimes, even the kid raised on a moonbase has trouble keeping up.

"Why'd they make contact?"

"Remember what happened up in Canada?"

".......oh no waaaaay...." Tyler has not yet read the other Lovecraft books, but did a google on Cthulu and decided it was time to hide under the bed with his Optimus Prime doll for a while.

"...how bad is it?"

"The Lemurians said that the being that had originally driven their species to sentience had been sleeping for several millions of years, and that they'd been dedicating themselves to keeping it asleep since about two days after they realized what it was," Ray says. "They contacted us because they don't know how much longer they can keep it from rising."

"....what were they doing to keep it from rising?" Tyler asks finally.

"We haven't got complete specifics out of them yet," Ray says. "They tend to speak in metaphors and we're still working on clarifying those. We're guessing ritual manipulation of psychokinetic energy flows, though."

Tyler tries thinking about how big of a ritual it'd have to be to keep something that big and boogabooga scary asleep.

"............The Gozer twinkie is gonna be a crumb compared to this."

"About the size of it," Ray says. "So that's the big stuff that's been happening in my world lately, really. Well, that and one other thing, but it happened here first."

"What happened?"

Ray eases the sling off his shoulder and onto the table. Carefully opening it he notes, "She's asleep right now. Mostly asleep, anyway. I don't think all of her brains are ever asleep at the same time. Her name's Jhalak."

"...whoa...what is she?"

"She's an alien from a species called the Jotok," Ray says. "They're five separate individuals that combine into one at a certain age and grow up this way. They tend to imprint on the first person to feed them and talk to them once they've done that. She managed to wander in here and find me, and she's been hanging around with me ever since."

That's...actually kind of cool.

"I'd like to meet her when she's awake sometime..."

Maybe later kiddo.

"No problem," Ray says. "She's never more than a few feet from me at any given time these days. I hope she lets up on that soon, so Romana and I don't have to - well, you get the idea- but for now she's with me pretty much whenever I'm here."

"What does she eat?" Tyler asks. "You taught me that it isn't such a bad idea to have snacks on me at any given time... worked out good with the star lions."
