Mel has a Security badge.

It's not the one pinned to her belt, though that's there too. This one is newer, and shiner than that one: straighter, not rusting, and catches the light as she flips it across her fingers and back again. It's Lan's.

At least Raph is back. Otherwise she'd be really annoyed at everyone leaving.

"Nah, the cryptic toy and the name calling is just a freebie,"Mel says cheerfully.

"OK, bar at the end of the verses. First drink's free, rooms upstairs. Bar'll run a tab - she's sentient and magic so show some 'spect.

"Rules are no violence, no grudges from outside and no sex. Someone gives you shit find someone with a badge like this. Chances are that about half the people here could pick you up and throw you 'cross the room so watch who you piss off. Some people are dead, others you might recognise from a book or a scope. Don't mention dwarves. Magic tends to run crazy so don't ever eat something that you just find lying around. Even if Bar gives it to you; if you didn't ask for it be ware.

"Apart from that, everything's spled. If you get hit by some random magic, it'll usually wear off, just wait it out."

"Okay, the first stuff I figured out. The rules, though, thanks," Hurley says.

"So... what's the problem with dwarves?"

"Dunno," Mel says cheerfully. "I never risked it, and I think it's kinda good advice in general."

"I guess I can't really argue with that," Hurley says. "So you, like, work here?"

"Security."

Mel uses the badge in her hand to tap the badge on her belt.

"Means you get in a fight I get to come break it up."

"Seriously, do I look like a guy who's gonna pick a fight?" Hurley says.

He looks more like a giant teddy bear. With poofy hair.

"Do I look like a girl gonna break it up if you do?"

"...you might be, like, one of those crazy ninjas or something," Hurley says.

"Not all ninjas are crazy!" Mel protests.

Maybe a little too defensively.

"Whoa," Hurley says. "I just meant, like... not like that crazy. Sorry."

Mel smiles immediately, moving one shoulder in a semi-shrug.

"Some of them are completely spun," she admits. "I'm not one, though. Just know a few."

"So... you are a ninja?" Hurley says.

"Nope," Mel says cheerfully. "I just really like fighting."

"Well, I guess you found the right job," Hurley says. "I really like chicken, so I like... used to work at a chicken place."

"And I'm a thief back home," Mel adds. "That's running and fighting and sneaking around.

"It's like Ninja, but the dress code's more relaxed."

Hurley nods. "Yeah, I had to wear the Mr. Cluck's uniform and a hairnet. That wasn't so fun. But I guess... erm, nevermind," he says. "So thief, huh? Where is home, like, exactly?"

"Haddyn, 2294," Mel replies. "After your time, I'm guessing."

"Holy crap, you're, like, a hot ninja thief chick from the future!" Hurley says.

"Yeah, I guess," Mel says, with a straight face. "I should probably work that into my speech."

"That is so totally cool," Hurley says. "That beats all the... end of the world stuff. That's... kind of scary. But ninja thief from the future? That's awesome."

Mel gives a bright grin.

"And we have flying cars."

"Dude!" Hurley says. "I knew we'd get them eventually."

"Yeah, damn sight more useful than those things that stay on the ground. Broke my fall a few times."

Hurley pauses for a second. "Don't think I'd want to ride in one, though."

"I prefer riding on top of them," Mel says.

"You don't like heights?"
