True chairs and couches and booths and rafters and stools are comfortable. They are, in fact, quite comfortable. But today Jenny has opted for a new seat: the floor. She sits with her back against the bar, knees pulled up and a notepad resting against them. There's a list of names on there - her top ten surnames, to be exact, arranged in alphabetical order and all with her name in the front:

Jenny Allen
Jenny Ayers
Jenny Cullen
Jenny Doctor
Jenny Foreman
Jenny Noble
Jenny O'Malley
Jenny Reynolds
Jenny Runner
Jenny Smith


She sits and stares at it, still quite unable to reach a decision.

Charlie quietly peers down at the notepad, reading the list of names upside down. He's good at that, just as he's good at moving right next to someone without quite being noticed. Or at least, he thinks that's the case.

She's a born soldier, Charlie, and still very good at what she was supposed to do. Jenny gives him a few seconds to read over the names and then looks up and smiles.

"Hiya Charlie!"

"Hello, Jenny. I see you are trying to pick a last name. Need some help?" He sits next to her. "As it turns out, I know a little about that."

Jenny nods, grin brightening when he sits next to her. She angles the list on her legs so he can better see it.

"I want it to count. So I'm not just another Jenny out there. And I want it to mean something to me."

"As it should. If you are lucky enough to choose a name, it should fit you. That's something I wish I knew when I chose my stage name." Which wasn't bad but he never uses. "I would suggest, however, that you leave out Allen. That would send the wrong message."

"S'too many Jenny's." John noted as he wandered by and glanced at her list. "I dated a Jenny Smith in high school..."

He paused, his heart seized in fear. "...she's not here is she?" D: D:

She blinks at the unfamiliar man, looking up in confusion. She thinks that the intention of her list is quite clear.

"Is Jenny Smith a common name, then?"

"Well...Smith is a common last name. Jenny...Sarah Jane...John...Bob." He shrugged. "The girlfriend's full name was Jennifer, though. Can be common. Was when I was a kid."


He sadfaced. He's getting old :(

"Luke," Jenny echoes, frowning a little. He's the only other Smith she knows. But the name had just sounded right for some reason.

The line gets a question mark, too. Then: "Jennifer?"

"Jenny's usually a nickname for Jennifer..." He shrugged. "I'm John, by the way."

Billy almost trips over her; he's not watching where he's going. "Ah! Sorry."

She laughs, quickly pulling in her legs closer and smiling brightly at him.

"You're not going to make a very good... what was it, superhero? if you don't watch where you're going!"

"Sorry," he says again, and because his dignity has been insulted, "I'm a little distracted right now. What are you doing on the floor?"

Boys can be very silly about their dignity, Jenny's been noticing. It makes her grin some more, in a very teasing like manner.

"I'm thinking," she answers a little more seriously. "It's a good place to think."

He drops down beside her. "I've never tried it."

It's comfy down here and the world looks different from this angle. Billy glances over at her notepad; it remind him of middle school when girls would write their names next to the last names of all the boys they liked. "What are you thinking about?"

Cal slept last night only because his body could no longer tolerate anything else. He could have stood to sleep for about two more days, though, so despite the long shower to wake himself up, he's still bleary when he comes downstairs and approaches the bar. This could explain why he nearly trips over Jenny before he sees her.

"Oh, shit, I'm sorry, what - oh, hey," he says, brightening and smiling when he recognizes her. "Good morning." Cal has developed a tendency to base the time of day on whenever he got out of bed.

Jenny grins at him, not at all phased by nearly being tripped over. It seems to be happening a lot today. She quickly glances towards the back door, looking mildly confused. She was outside earlier and she's almost positive that it's past noon now.

"I don't think it's morning anymore."

"Probably not," Cal agrees. "I lose track."

He orders his coffee and is pleased when it is not accompanied by a plate of toast. Apparently, the Bar feels that he ate enough yesterday to deserve not getting pestered. So he asks for s blueberry muffin - the Bar's not the only one who can reward desirable behavior - then looks down at Jenny.

"You want anything?"

Jenny shakes her head. She ate breakfast a while back and isn't really that hungry. Really, she's too caught up in this dillema of surnames to think of something like food and drink.

"Not really, no."

"Okay." Cal picks up his coffee and muffin, then pauses. In the six months between his first visit to Milliways and his death, he'd thought of the place frequently. Every time he opened a door, to start with. The conversation with Jenny had figured prominently in his memories, both how it had actually gone and how he wished it had gone. Had he realized he wasn't hallucinating, he would have behaved a bit differently.

So he crouches down a bit awkwardly to her level and says,

"Uh, listen, I just wanted to apologize for how I acted last time we talked. I - wasn't really at my best." Massive understatement. "So if I made you nervous or anything, I'm sorry."

The thing about the way Jenny's sitting?

Is it's entirely possible to read over her shoulder if one perches on a barstool nearby.

Somebody might be doing just that, largely to see how long it'll take her to notice.

It really doesn't take long at all. Jenny gives her a few seconds to look over the list and then tilts her head upward.

"Any suggestions?"

"You got me, kid," she says lightly. "What are they?"

"Last names," Jenny answers simply enough. "I'm trying to find one for myself."

Cavilo shifts her position, leaning against the bartop.
