X slips downstairs after her shift in the nightclub, half-glancing at the back door before she decides to forgo training for the moment.

It is more important to eat something. Just in case.

The fact that X-23 (and her soup) are settled at the bar instead of her usual booth is entirely unrelated to anything.

Except that she refuses to be uncomfortable in what is, for now, her home.

This is just proof of that.

"No."

Beat.

"I like it, too. When it is sparring."

The other kind of fighting--

X just doesn't get it.

And it hurts.

"But he likes it when it's more than that," she hazards.

X looks startled.

"No."

Beat.

"I do not think so."

She shrugs.

"I do not mind killing."

"But you mind..."

She pauses, thinks, starts again.

"Do you like him?"

This time X really does press her hand against the bartop. Hard.

"Yes."

She'd repeat that he is like her, but--

That is not all of it. Not really.

"Ah."

And this is the hard (old familiar) part.

X just flinches a little more, tucking her knees up so she can rest her cheek against them.

She doesn't say anything.

Artemis is quiet for a while.






"Does he know?"

X refuses to look up.

It will not help.





At least she's not running away?

"It is not relevant."

Not running away is a big step.


"Do you really mean that?"

"He does not like me."

She makes him angry.

X does not understand why.

X also does not understand a lot of things.

"And you know that for sure?"

Boys, as it has been mentioned, are weird.

X has nothing to offer but a shrug.

"I do not know."

She chews at her lower lip.

"Do you think he'd tell you how he feels, if you asked?"

"No."

She does not want to ask.

It is--awkward.

"It is not relevant."

Artemis is definitely getting the feeling that 'relevant' does not mean what she thinks it means.



"It's gonna be okay."


It isn't a lie.

She just doesn't know how.

"Okay," X says.

It's not that she sounds disbelieving.

It's that this, too, is not relevant.
