Mar. 3rd, 2021 08:42 pmI spent a lot of time in Milliways enjoying the Bar's digital media library, usually in my room.
But the longer I was at Milliways, the more time I spent in the physical library, with the books. People who live on space stations or ships generally don't have physical books, because space is at a premium or they have to travel light or both. People who live on planets in houses with lots of space usually have some books, but they're religious texts or heirlooms or things with sentimental value (or some combination of these). Big buildings full of books just weren't a thing in settled space, except in historical fiction serials.
I liked the smell of all the books too. I'm not sure why, because normally I don't feel one way or the other about most smells. (My olfactory system is not connected to a digestive system, so I don't have instinctive or visceral reactions to smells the way humans usually do.)
I'd been watching a lot of serials from a particular span of time in a certain nation-state on old Earth, and I felt like there was a lot of background I was missing. So I was at a table in the library with a bunch of books about a political entity called the USSR and something called the Cold War.
(As it turned out, both of these things were significant/awkward for a lot of humans in Milliways.)
