Lorne strides through the door into the Bar wearing a flightsuit, carrying a helmet, and looking like he’s got somewhere very important to be, and when he discovers he’s not there, he mutters, “Oh no. Not now, not fucking now,” and turns back to his door.

Which…isn’t there anymore.

His helmet gets thrown, rather violently, to the ground, and he slams his hand against the wall where his door should be. “Don’t goddamn do this to me now!”

The string of curses he lets fly is getting progressively more colorful as he goes.

"I know you'd rather be there," Jack says quietly.

"Only because I want to help, and I'm...worried about my friends." He sits back and takes a sip of his beer. "Any other day I'd be happy to be here with you instead.

"They won't even know you've been away," Jack says.

"No, but I'll know. And I'll worry. And..."

He stops and takes a bite of meatloaf. "And there's nothing I can do about it, I know."

Jack eats too, not knowing what to say.

After a while of silent chewing, Lorne says, "How's the cabin coming?"

"We have a roof."

Lorne smiles a little. "Good. Walls and a roof. We're almost there."

"Still need a good door and a fireplace. And stairs to the loft."

"Well," Lorne says. "I'm here...for a while. We should be able to get that done without too much trouble."

He takes a sip and smiles over the rim of his glass. "And then a bed."

Jack smiles a little. "Yeah. A big soft bed."

"With lots of comfy blankets," Lorne adds, finishing off his mashed potatoes.

"And pillows."

"Yes, pillows." Lorne nods. "And on special occasions we can take all the pillows and blankets and pile them in front of the fire."

Making plans is always a useful distraction.

"Then we'll need lots of pillows. That floor won't be soft.

"We do also need a floor," he adds.

"Floors are overrated," Lorne says. "But I suppose we could put one in."

"The ground will get cold when it snows. It'll freeze."

"So practical, you," Lorne murmurs, giving Jack a soft look.

"One of us has to be," Jack says softly.

"I'm practical elsewhere. I don't need to be here."

"Then I'm happy to take over that part, sweetheart."

"Thank you," Lorne says softly, reaching for Jack's hand again.

"Dessert?"

"Dessert," Jack says with a nod. "You choose."

"Hmm..." Lorne says, thinking. "Pumpkin cheesecake, I think. It's that time of year."

"That sounds delicious. Good for autumn."
