Lorne had intended, the next time he was back in the bar, to head straight for the cabin (maybe stopping by the forge first to see if Jack was there), but he catches a glimpse of a calendar on his way out and stops by the bar first.

"Hey, sweetheart," he says, patting the counter. "I need a Christmas gift for Jack. Got any suggestions?"

He does not answer at once.

"Well," he says "I am well. Very well. It is a strange thing."

"Good," Lorne says, smiling broadly. "Glad to hear it."

"It is a new thing," Teja says, "and I am not yet accustomed to it. Happiness is fleeting -- it might well go away again."

"That's usually the way of things," Lorne agrees, sobering just a bit. "But that's all the more reason to enjoy it while it lasts, don't you think?"

"It is a thing," Teja says, "less bound to the moment; it would be true only if one might trust it."

Lorne tilts his head, a bit confused. "How do you mean?"

"I do not wish for the pleasure of a moment, but the trust in a future," Teja says.

"Ah, I see." Lorne thinks about this for a moment. "I don't think anyone ever really gets that, though. You can't ever be certain you'll be happy in the future, no matter what your life is like."

This from a man who thought he had everything less than a year ago.

"One cannot be certain," Teja says, "but as it is now, it seems as if I was to wake, some morning, and it was all merely a dream to taunt me."

"Yeah," Lorne says, quietly. "I know how that feels."

"Then, I sit by the fire, and there he is," Teja says, "and the dream will, indeed, last another day."

Lorne nods. "And for that day, that's all that matters."

"Indeed," Teja says. "It is still so new, I must measure it in mere days."

Lorne raises his eyebrows. "Oh, is this someone new?"

Quietly, "Yes."

Pause.

"Unexpected. Not fitting. Deeply serious. Bemusing."

"Sounds...complicated," Lorne says. "In a good way."

"Complicated," Teja says. "Confusing. We find each other that -- deeply so!"

Lorne nods, chuckling softly. "Yeah, I get that. Keeps things interesting at least."

Jack is often confusing. Half a century time difference will do that.

"Things are so new still," Teja says, "they must not be kept anything, yet -- but they are!"

"All the more reason not to want it to be boring yet," Lorne says, smiling.

"It is anything but," Teja says. "Doubting one's sanity is never dull!"
