At a table with good light is a gentleman with shoulder-length braided, beaded hair possessed of pale eyes, a comfortable green shirt rolled back to his elbows which exposes scars from left wrist to left elbow (actually a nearly solid expanse of scar), and a collection of very sharp items which he is polishing one at a time. They range from things that would look perfectly ordinary in the armies of Troy to things that look rather like they were torn off of a spaceship.

He isn't the only one. There are two men at the next table tinkering with a pile of what appear to be torture devices.

Oh. Alright.

"Hello Spoon," says Yunno, "I missed - Christmas? I think it was."

Non-terran, spends almost all his time on Earth in Japan. There are some blind spots culturally.

"So," he says shyly before pulling a box from behind his back, "I guess I'm a bit late. Merry Christmas."

"Sure," says Yunno passing over the box (green wrapping paper, pinkish ribbon), "How have you been?"

"That's good," says Yunno slipping the box into a pocket, "I went on a salvage operation - That's where your present is from by the way - and I got a book on Chinese magic for Christmas so I've been reading up on that."

Frankly working in scrolls and five elements is a freakin' relief compared to some of the things he's been find upstairs.

It's a small metal bird, with wind up key in the back.

"Don't try it outside, I'm not sure how far it'll fly," advises Yunno, "And not really. The people runnning the expedition dealt with the dwarves that were living in the tunnels already. They had some sort of plan to replace all the animals and plants with metal replicas."

Makes no sense!

Yunno shudders at that too.

"No idea how they intended to breath after they replaced the trees," he says, "And you could try only winding it a little and seeing how far a certain number of turns takes it."

It's a replica in gold and copper of one of the multitude of small brown birds that populates the world. The sort that needs a DNA test to tell apart from the others.

"I didn't see those," says Yunno, "But they had a giant tree built out of precious metals in one of the central cave. It was pretty, but well, dead."

A lady hoodlum Ace takes a nearby seat, curled up and comfortable and still a bit quiet from her run-in from her adventures in official reprimand nearly a week before.

She has cocoa.

No one should be surprised.

[identity profile] nitro-is-ace.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
It is, rather, and while not quite as good as the real thing, it does have less 'sharp things torn from spaceships' in the equation.

She contemplates the closest of the sharp things, carefully.

[identity profile] nitro-is-ace.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds like a plan." Ace agrees with a crooked smile, leaving the closest sharp thing alone for a bit while fishing under the table for the cases. With nimble fingers, she starts storing already-polished pieces away.

She'd joke that she doesn't know what that wife wanted, but she did know what she wanted... but she figures he'd probably take it badly, and she'd rather things be pleasant.

"Sommat like curry? S'good for cold days."

[identity profile] nitro-is-ace.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds brilliant. An' maybe some cornbread?" She agrees, and leans over to steal a quick snog.

That's her husband - she'd probably die of shock if he ever brought over a pile of fries and a soda.

When he gets back, the cases have been neatly tucked under the table again.
