Parker stalks into the bar, clearly coming in from a date.
A date that has ended two hours early, as it happens. As fix-ups go? That had been a disaster. Parker doesn’t know what the hell Lexie had been thinking. Unless “He’s a really nice guy—lots of fun,” now translates to “He likes to drink and try to get his hand up your skirt.”
Parker had told him where to stick it and called a cab to take her back to Hearst.
She drops her purse on a table, and says hello to and places an order with a passing waitrat. By the time she has unbuckled and kicked off her heels and propped her feet up comfortably in an empty chair with a long sigh, her strawberry-lemonade has arrived.
Civilization exists. Even if you have to go to the End of the Universe to find it sometimes.

It's not a leap of logic. Parker's not exactly dressed for a quiet night at the library.

"Going on a date with Vlad the Impaler would have been preferable. That's how my date was."
At least with Vlad, Parker could have just run him through and been done with him.

Meg pauses.
"Possibly both."

Parker takes a sip from her cup of lemonade.
"The menu was actually fine," she adds.

"Up there with 'drunken.'"
no subject
"I gave it an hour and then called a cab."
Life is too short.

X could smell Parker. And Meg.
And maybe alcohol, though probably she just heard them talking.
She worries.
"It is okay?"
no subject
Oddly, she hadn't been in much of a mood to drink in the company of her date.
"You can smell that?" she asks Laura.
no subject
"Yes."
If she could, she'd add 'duh' to that. But she's X, so--
"Alcohol is very strong. The scent."

"Date night. Well, for a given definition of date," she adds wryly.
no subject
"Bad?"
no subject
Parker shakes her head.
"It was a friend fix-up. I really thought she had better taste."

no subject
"The Beatles?" she asks.
She knows about the Beatles, of course. But she can't recall any octopi in their songs.

"Well, trust me. This is one Octopus's garden I will never be venturing into. I have standards."
Parker grins.
"I'm Parker," she adds.

"Long day?"
no subject
"Actually? Kind of short."
She'd scaled back on a couple of things for the sake of the date.
Which had wound up being pretty short, all things considered.

Parker smiles wryly.
"My date got called early on account of 'he couldn't keep his hands to himself.'"
no subject
He's disgusted by men like that but he's not gonna get on his soap box.
no subject
"He'll never play the piano again," she says complacently, taking a sip of her lemonade.
She's probably kidding.
Or is she?
no subject
He would help her hide the evidence and set the scene. He could too
no subject
Deadpan.
Except for the mischieveous eyes. Parker can never keep emotion out of her eyes, it seems.
