All Bobby wanted to do was come in for a six-pack so he didn't have to go out for one. He's got his own idea of what he needs to be doing -- there's a sheaf of papers ripped out of a book to translate and send down to Cheyenne to be pieced back together, and there's his battered old copy of The Milagro Beanfield War to reread for the fifth time -- but apparently the bar has other ideas.

"Yeah?" Bobby asks the bar. "What's in it for me?"

A note appears.

Bobby smiles.




Shortly thereafter, he slings a towel over his shoulder behind the bar, and chalks something up on the board in very precise handwriting:

SPECIALS

MOONSHINE MADE FROM A CACTUS

I DIDN'T ASK WHAT KIND OF CACTUS AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU

AND IF YOU GO BLIND IT'S NOT MY FAULT; CAVEAT EMPTOR

Looks like happy hour is open.

[Open until ten Mountain time! Threadhop! Try the moonshine!

And for the record: there is no known liquor made from the cactus.]

Sam Adams has gone over well once tonight already; Bobby pulls down the tap. "So really -- how bad is that shine?"

"To be 'onest, na that bad, wouldna drink it e'ery day or well e'ery month but glad to try it."

Its a beer Will recognizes and he nods at it.

Bobby fills up a pint glass and swaps out that one for the one that held the cactus moonshine. "Reckon you could call it educational to try everything once."

"Aye, 'rhaps though na sure I'd want to try e'erythin' 'ere."

Though he's come rather close a few times, being a teenager in Milliways leads to some rather foolish drinking games.

Bobby laughs. "Hell, me neither."

[will_scarlett]

"Oh aye an Lady Bar likes the rum bit too much too."

[salver]

"She does, huh?" Bobby casts a look at the bartop. "Didn't know that. How'd you find it out?"

[will_scarlett]

"Drinkin' with a man called Cap'n Jack Sparrow, naught but one like 'em."

[salver]

"And I reckon that means the bar likes him too," Bobby says, a little dry.

[will_scarlett]

"Aye, ask 'er 'bout rum an Cap'n Sparrow some time or the Barman Mikey, 'e could tell ye 'bout duct tape."

[salver]

"You know, son, any time duct tape gets involved, I got to get a little leery of asking some questions."

[will_scarlett]

That just gets a grin from Will,

"Just 'elpin' someone get o'er a 'ando'er was all."

This is true in some very basic senses if you kind of tilt the story on its head a bit.
