It's simple enough, in the end.
One day Roland leaves the castle to go a-walking; he stays gone for a while. When he returns, it raises no eyebrows.
He smiles.
Time to go alleyo.
It's simple enough, in the end: a section of the forest on the outskirts of the barony of New Canaan. A door, ghostwood, familiar. Not as though he doesn't know what to expect, with the chimes, the brief sensation of falling.
He might even lose his balance and stumble, just a little, when he appears not in front of the bar, but by the lake -- by the Caribbean inlet, in fact. Tide's coming in.
Roland Deschain looks up at the stars, takes in a breath, and does not smile in the least.
He'll stay put, he thinks, looking at the building and the lights, hearing faint sounds of water, glass, low voices. For now.

He's silent for a moment.
"It is," he says finally, "very well."
Another pause.
"It may surprise you that I would ask." His eyes glitter a little in the darkness; his smile is faint. "But I've had cause to think about this question lately myself. Now what will you do?"

In truth, nothing need be said between them, not in this.
A pause, and then she addresses his question.
"At present, I am collecting tales and information that might be used to write a history of a place known as Twin Peaks."

"For what purpose, lady-sai?"

Raises his eyebrows.
That's not why he asked, and she very well knows it.

"Do you doubt me?"

"No, Moiraine. But I suspect that is not the true answer to the question I asked."

Says, "Gilead is renewed."

"Is it so? Truly?"
no subject
"No word that is not true," he says. "To you."

Roland settles back on the bench, and pushes the swing back again.
"Part of the promise was that the Beams would regenerate." His tone is mild. "They were not the only thing restored. Directions slid into place again. The sun rises in the east, sets in the west, as they should. That was promised before I went to the Tower, and in the time after... it happened. A group went to settle, and I with them."
Roland is leaving out a lot.

It is enough, all the same.
When he pauses, there is silence between them for a moment.
"And now?"
