Today the bar finds itself in the company of two (relatively) familiar faces who are not often seen together.

Lorne has taken on babysitting duties to give Teyla and Kanaan some time alone together. And when his bouncing walk with Torren took him into Milliways, he accepted that gladly.

Which means there's an Air Force major wandering around the bar holding a quite small baby that doesn't belong to him, trying to get him to go back to sleep.

Demeter smiles at both of them and says quietly,

"Would you like some help?"

Lorne smiles at her. "You have a lot of experience calming fussy kids?"

Torren's not extremely fussy at the moment, but he's squirming a little and clearly not wanting to sleep.

"Quite a bit yes, I'm Demeter."

Lorne's classical education was not that extensive.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Lorne. I'd offer you my hand, but," he gestures to the wide awake infant in his arms.

"Do you want me to take him? How long has he been fussy?"

Demeter leans over to look at Torren, scenting the air with Summer and address him,

"Now what have you been up to, little one?"

"If you'd like," Lorne says, handing him over easily. "He woke up about half an hour ago. His mom says he likes to be walked, that it puts him to sleep."

She easily takes Torren and smiles at him, rocking him in her arms,

"He's a beautiful boy."

"Yeah," Lorne gives them both a fond smile. "He's not mine," he's quick to add. "I'm just watching him for a friend."

"Teyla's, I'm so glad that he's doing as well as he is."

One of the perks of being a goddess of fertility, Demeter knows these things.

"We're all happy to have them both safe at this point," Lorne says. He tilts his head. "You know Teyla?"

"Yes, I've met her here."

Torren is starting to quiet,

"Do you know when he last ate?"

"Uh...Teyla fed him before she gave him to me, so...a couple hours, I guess.

"You really are good with kids, huh?"

"Its part of who I am, so yes."

"Oh?" He raises an eyebrow. "Who are you, then? If you don't mind me asking?"

"Demeter, goddess of agriculture and fertility."

"Oh. Oh. Okay. Sorry, I didn't recognize your name."

He thinks back for a moment. It seems familiar, something in an art class once, maybe...

"Hey, you're Persephone's mom, aren't you?"

"Yes, that's me and truly its no worry, I'm used to not being known."

Torren is almost asleep now in her arms.

"I'd guess here you probably run into people who'd have no reason to know you."

He's quietly impressed at her skills with Torren.

"I met your daughter once. When I first came here."

"Oh yes, its rather restful. I'm glad that you did, she hasn't been here for a while."

"Yeah, it's been a while since I saw her. I liked her though. Introduced her to pizza."

First of many strange Milliways experiences.

"I'm sure she must have liked it. Where are you from, Lorne?"

She can kind of feel American land in him but she's not as good at pinpointing places there as she is in Europe.

Lorne's guessing the whole 'fertility goddess' thing precludes her being a threat to national security.

"I grew up in the States, mostly, but I live in Atlantis now. In the Pegasus Galaxy."

"Oh my, an Atlantis."

He chuckles. "Yeah. It's...kind of wonderful."

"Will you tell me what its like?"

"I'm not sure I'd do it justice, but okay."

He pauses, not sure where to start. "It's beautiful, for one thing. It's all soaring towers and spreading arms. And it's right on the ocean. I mean, literally. The city itself floats on the ocean. And it's...well, the people who built it, they coded certain functions to a specific gene? And I have that gene, so...sometimes I can actually feel the city under my skin."

He gives her a sheepish smile. "Sounds a little weird, I know."

"It sounds wonderful and you're quite lucky to have found such a place to live."

He grins. "Yeah, I really am."

"What do you do there?"

"I'm second in command of the military operations. So...whatever my CO tells me, mostly."

"That must be a hard job. Is there a great need for an army out there?"

He shrugs. "It keeps me busy. And there's a very great need. We're at war."

"I'm even more sorry to hear that."

He smiles wryly. "That's life, isn't it? There's always war somewhere."

"Doesn't mean that we have to like it."

"It doesn't, no. And I'd be worried if we did."

"True, I've never understood how Ares can revel in it so. Especially when there's so much of life to be treasured. Do you want to hold him again, he's quite asleep."

"Oh, sure," Lorne says and moves to take Torren from her. "Thanks. I really appreciate that."

"You're very welcome. Please give Teyla all my good wishes when you next see her."

He smiles. "I'll do that. It was really good meeting you, Demeter."

"You too, Lorne."

She smiles and gives Torren a kiss on the forehead and Lorne one on the cheek.

Lorne smiles back, almost blushing. "Thanks again."
