"Me? Again?"
The young witch does not seem terribly happy about Bar's demands on her time, but puts her massive textbook aside with a sigh. Well, this probably does count as a half-way reasonable excuse- sorry, reason not to complete her essays just yet, and at least Millitime will mean she hasn't lost anything.
Actually, that's an idea...
After a few moments' thought (and a few more moments' scrutiny of the cocktail book), Minerva picks up a red chalk and writes in the board in a firm, neat hand:
Happy Hour Specials:
Butterbeer
Firewhiskey and gillysoda
Pumpkin Juice
Half off any drink if you can teach me something I don't know about transfiguration.
Double price if you try to lie.
Raising her voice authoritatively: "Happy Hour's open!"
Come and try to teach the teacher-to-be.
[OOC: And it's 5:30am here and I'm flagging, so happy hour is now closed! Slowtime is love, guys.]

He has no idea if that's true or not, but it might be!

"Actually, that's a misperception. It's been generally accepted since Hillary Shuggen-Walderson's seminal work on the subject that the brain is transfigured along with the rest of the animal, and that therefore they do not remain conscious provided the transfiguration has been properly performed."
And if she sounds like she's swallowed a textbook, she also sounds very pleased about it, too.
"I have an exam on Tuesday," is the explanation. "But I won't charge you double, since it is a very common misperception."
By people who Haven't Done Their Homework.

She gets a grin directed at her. It's a very lopsided, self-deprecating grin, because he knows just how unsubtle and ham-handed that was.

"Transfiguration?"

"The magical art of transforming one thing into another," Minerva explains. "It's my favourite subject."
And her best, although that doesn't need to be stated: it's all in the tone.

"Does it have to be an active lie," he asks, "or simply not true in your world?"
no subject
"An active lie," she says. "I was referring to people who would try to make something up in order to get their drink for less. Of course, seeing through them would be an exercise in itself."
She does not have a problem with this. All kinds of learning are helpful.

Cata doesn't know enough about magic to try to fake it. Besides, the drink names are more than a bit distracting.

"It's sweet, creamy and slightly alcoholic. I'm led to believe it tastes a little like something called butterscotch?"

She taps her fingers on the bar thoughtfully. "Fairly strong alcoholic drink. It's good for courage, and tastes bittersweet. I like it."
In moderation.

There's a Roman boy with vibrant green eyes staring up at her.

"It's sweet and creamy," she says, leaning over the bar to look at him better. "Slightly alcoholic, but not too much so."

"So does that mean," he asks, "that if I want to know something about transfiguration, I have to buy you a drink?"
The different kinds of magic in Milliways are a source of interest to him. On his world, he's the only one who really has it, since magic is evil and unGodly and all. Humans certainly don't wield it, no matter what they might think, and Applegate is both alarmed and intrigued by the existence of worlds where they do.
He doesn't have to ask questions to learn about the magic he can sense*, but it's more fun that way.
*like most assertions about Applegate, this is not entirely true.

"I'm fairly sure I'm not allowed to drink on duty," she says primly. "But questions are allowed."

"Depends on what kind of transfiguration. I guess I'll try some butterbeer, ta."

She accios him a butterbeer, the lid popping off with the tap of a wand before she slides it across the bar to him.
"There you go."
