Milliways is up one vampire Slayer, wandering in from the staff wing with her nose buried in a book.

No, this is not as rare a circumstance as you might believe: the book in question is a Watcher's Diary from the 18th Century, and the history of Vampire Slayers happens to be Mel's very personal area of dorkery.

Without once looking up from her book, she swings by Bar, picks up a pint of nog and a plate of fried paradoxes and finds her way to a table in the middle of the bar.

And there she remains.

"That...that doesn't even make sense," Carlisle stammers, even as his expression widens some. He starts to process the idea though, talking out loud with, "If they're publicly...advertising for these donors, then they're either capable of stopping themselves before killing them or they are definitely falling into your territory."

Mel gives a Carisle a lok that can only be described as I know! at his first statement.

To the second, "this Austen girl got out fine, so someone stopped before too long."

"There is one thing though --

"Miss Austen said she fell asleep or blacked out, and woke up with the bite mark. Does that seem like something your Harth would do? Or could do?"

"Not without magic," Mel admits. "But he's got magic.

"It's still not really his style. He likes to play games. Only thing I'd say is... I never met this girl. The thing about my Harth is... he's single minded."

Carlisle doesn't add Most vampires are. It wouldn't help.

"Is Security working on...suspects? Is that even the term that applies?"

"Security," meaning her, "only just found out about it. "S'the usual form, though.

"Any reason to think it's not a lurk?"

"I barely understand vampires with fangs, so it is the only conclusion I know how to draw," Carlisle confirms, wishing he could say more with more certainty.

As an addendum: "If Miss Austen comes back, she will probably have scarring from the bite and I will still be able to measure."

"Hope for her it doesn't," Mel says, running her finger around the high collar of her halterneck.

"I'm gonna draw up a list of vampires in the bar. Your world is ruled out, mine isn't.

"Doubt it, though. There's usually a biger bite than that."

"Is there anything I should be doing to assist?"

Mel shakes her head "Keeping an ear to the ground. If you know any other vamps around I'd like to know. Watch for any other vics?"

"I can do that."

Carlisle smile a bit halfheartedly. "One of these days you and I will have a reason to talk that isn't about vampires and damage that they are causing."

Mel smirks.

"Irony is that I come here t'get away from that toy."

"As do I. More or less."

Carlisle clears his throat, getting ready to dismiss himself, with, "I should be getting on with my day - before I head back I will leave a message for Doctor Tam about wishing to be informed of any recent or future patients with bite marks."

"Rocketship," Mel says, nodding to confirm the upcoming dismissal as much as the information. "Get Guppy, too. I'll let Security know."

"Of course."

This would be why, after a smile to dismiss himself and a pit-stop to the bar to get some paper, Carlisle disappears to the infirmary before heading home.

Where he specifically does not tell his wife about all of this. He's not interested in that fight.
