In one corner of the bar is a circle of chairs, surrounding a table full of food. Today the speciality is pastries - pain au chocolat, cinnamon swirls, danishes, etc.

In the middle is a big sign, which someone has vandalised decorated with stickers of smiley faces during the cause of the week.

Carlotta drops down off the beam to examine the pastries.

Thirteen grins as she spots Carlotta, wandering over to her.

"Well, is it a good sign you're not in a maid's outfit?"

Carlotta grins.

"Actually I both lost and won that bet, we just haven't carried it out yet."

[numbered_doctor]

"Lost and won? How does that work?"

[fiery_ring]

"Mam'zelle gave me the wrong paper - one of the sixth form exams got mixed in with the fifth form papers. She decided it wouldn't be fair to rank me alongside either my own form or the sixth form, so I got 1/1. That's in the top half and bottom at the same time."

A woman walks by and takes a cinnamon swirl.

"Hi, welcome to Life Support." Guppy says, smiling slightly and looking up at her.

He has a swollen purple nose still.

"Whatever happened to your face?" she says, looking at him. She has a slight Scottish accent, but that's not so incredibly rare.

Urquhart really doesn't know. He remembers walking into the bar, the door meeting resistance, and -- darkness.

"I ran into a door." Guppy says. "I was going one way, the guy behind it was going the other. It's not broken."

"I am sorry to hear that," she says, smoothly and politely, nibbling her cinnamon swirl.

If Guppy and his child had been on the other side of the door when Urquhart slammed it open, that would explain the darkness. The little boy screaming with fright or pain would have sent him straight into madness.

"Was anybody else hurt?" she asks, idly curious.

"No. Hard to injure more than one person with a door." Guppy says, wondering slightly at the question.

He extends a hand. "I'm Guppy."

I walked into the bar. I was able to enter, because it had a door. I look around the bar. I saw a sign with doughnuts on it. I read it. I was able to read it, because I am literate. I went to the sign. There was a man standing beside it.

"Hello," I said, "I am a parton of the bar. This is my cocktail."

My eyes shifted from left to right.

Okaay.

"Hi, I'm Guppy, welcome to Life support."

I looked at the man. He was named after a fish, though he did not look like it.

"Does this aforementioned 'Life Support' have any connection to the MilkMan?"

"No, but I can get you milk if you'd like some."

After a recon scan, I assessed The Fish Man had no connection to The MilkMan.

"No thank you. I wish to inquire about the meaning of 'Life Support.'"

"Oh, it's a gathering for people who are having problems or worries, either here or back home. But you're also welcome just to come for the free food."

"Can I have one of those?" says a little girl pointing to one of the pain au chocolat.

[guppy_sandhu]

"Go ahead, help yourself." Guppy says, passing the plate over.

"Take as many as you like."

[time_dancer]

"Thank you," the girl says very politely and picks one up. Pointing to the Life Support sign she asks, "Do people have many problems here?"

[guppy_sandhu]

"Yeah, quite often. Here or at home. We're here in case people don't have anyone else to talk to."

[time_dancer]

The girl nods and says, "My name's Val. I'm just visiting her."

For an instance she seemed as if she were about to say something else but obviously she's changed her mind.

"Nice to meet you Val, I'm Guppy." Guppy says.

Aleph is tempted. Because pastries! But therapy groups, and in general she finds them bullshit.

Hmm. Hmmmmmmm.







She snags a cinnamon swirl, ninja-like.
