Here's a guy who's not around much.

Or... yes, actually he is. But mostly he's outside, being depressingly healthy, upstairs being depressingly intellectual, or lurking creepily about in the shadows.

Today he's sitting at the bar with a notepad, a pencil, and a calculating expression.

It's probably not worth asking him what he's up to.

But it can't hurt to ask?

The hesitation is longer this time.

"She'll hear," River says, at last, pressing her fingers against the hard edge of the bar. She watches her hand, the contrast of skin and wood, the curves and the angled knuckles; her other hand is stiff and slowly shifting at her side.

"I. I'll try. There's gaps -- the translation, she can't tell the transmission."

She swallows. Says carefully, focusing on the enunciation of every syllable: "The words get confused."

Havelock nods, gently for him.

"That's all right," he tells her. "I will listen to you in turn. We'll see what happens."

Softly, "Always do."

Ka rolls on, so they say.

"Okay."

"Thank you, River," he says, equally soft.

He owes her something in return, he knows - but that can be dealt with in the future. Besides, of all the people he could be obligated to, River is not one that he minds too much.

One corner of River's mouth curls up. It's a small motion, but it changes the look of her face; it makes her look not younger, but more relaxed, as if they're sharing a secret.

Which, of course, they are.

It's what they're good at.

Havelock sits back a little, tension lessening in his own way - it doesn't involve smiling, but his demeanor is than much more calm and collected.

It's good to have a plan of action, even one so vague.

One of the things, yes.

River tucks her ankles around the legs of her barstool, and lets her gaze wander down to Bar. Her expression is, if not precisely satisfied, something approaching it.

[I GUESS. And, probably more relevantly in some ways, the listening more carefully than most people thing. To River, the assassin thing is kind of incidental -- I mean, it's not, in that he has both sensible priorities and a moral compass she's only sort of in accord with, but conversationally it takes second place to the fact that he knows how to listen to her.
