Gordon's been busy doing suit maintenance upstairs and forgot the deal he made with Bar earlier in the week. As a consequence he comes skidding down the banister and practically leaps over the bar- he just looked at the clock.

"It's all right. It happens."

He rubs at his forehead with one thumb for a moment, thinking.

"Sorry about your situation too." Because damn, nobody else needs anything like Xen.

"Thanks," Sam tells him.

It sounds sincere. A beat.

"At least you've got the way here, right?"

"That helps," Gordon allows. He considers the younger man for a bit, then holds up one finger. "Just a second."

A moment later he's pushing a brown box from underneath the Bar at Sam.

"You should eat. You look like I felt after twenty-nine hours of fighting. Blood sugar's probably in the toilet."

"Something like that, yeah--"

He takes one look at the box, and surprises himself with a sudden grin.

"-- okay, now that's just awesome."

"Spend as long in labs as I have," Gordon says, "and you meet people who have very interesting ideas about how to stay on their feet. I knew a man once who was working on caffeinated beef jerky for long-haul truckers and students on Atkins."

"That sounds pretty disgusting. Beef jerky's bad enough as it is."

Sam shakes his head.

"Labs-- in 2021, you said? It's 2007 for us," he thinks to add. "And what people are working on is stuff like that?"

"Well, the jerky was back when I was in college," Gordon says. "MIT, class of '96. There were rumors that the good coffee at Black Mesa was made from beans someone exposed to the particle accelerators, though... that was high energy physics. Quantum teleportation research, for the most part."

"... okay then."

He nods at the large mug Gordon had filled.

"This isn't that coffee, is it?"

[acts_of_gord]

"Nope. Ordinary Sumatran beans, standard dark roast, ordinary formulation. If I had to wear a suit of signal-flare orange body armor to go anywhere near the equipment, I'm not going to put anyone's food or drink near it."

"I can see why."

Having reminded himself, he picks up the mug and takes a sip.

"It's good. Thanks."

"You're welcome," Gordon says. "There's more when you need it."

"Appreciate it."

Sam lifts the mug to him in something of a salute as he makes ready to leave.

"Good to meet you, man."

[acts_of_gord]

"Same here," Gordon says. "Take care out there."

He nods to Gordon.

"You too."
