As soon as the shower had started running in the motel's bathroom, Sam had seized his chance. He yelled something indistinct about lunch, grabbed his laptop and messenger bag, and headed straight for Milliways without waiting for Dean to answer.

Now he's sitting at a booth, the laptop open in front of him, staring at something on the screen.

(From time to time he stares at a note, instead.)

Either way, it doesn't look like he's making much progress.

"I do, too."

Beat.

"I do not think Tomas is like me. Then."

"Because you're tall," she answers easily. "I love a tall man."

She glances at him, head cocked slightly.

The smile is still in tact for a moment longer.

"And ... well, then there's the whole Anti-Christ thing of course."

"From what you told me before, I'm guessing it wasn't all that great," Sam says, quietly.

Andrew blinks back at him. "I was there for that."

Half a beat. "We talked, afterwards. I, I thought ..."

He looks aside. "Anyway."

X shrugs, one-shouldered and quick.

"It has been useful. The training."

That is what is relevant.

He goes from startled to suspicious in a heartbeat. Sam's expression hardens and closes off, fast.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Sam looks utterly startled.

"-- wait, what? You were there?"

"Did I not tell you about --" he starts, sounding puzzled, and then abruptly closes his mouth.

"There's that, at least."

He smiles.

"Maybe the baseball will be, too."

X gives that all the consideration it deserves.

"The plumbing will be more useful."

Beat.

"And the roofing."

"Oh, come on, Sam. You're really going to sit there and tell me you have no idea about the big Celebrity Death Match?"

She has the grace not to let out an incredulous laugh. She does allow that skepticism to show through, though.

"Yellow Eyes rounding you psychic kids up, you duking it out and coming out the sole survivor?"

"No," Sam says.

Steadily.

"You didn't."

Sam gives her an odd look.

"... er, not to misuse a metaphor, but did that just come from left field or am I missing something?"

X blinks.

"I am learning to do that now, too."

Beat.

"Sometimes it is easier than baseball."

It's another moment, but she does finally slip into the booth across from him. There's no 'thank you' or particularly glad look to go with it.

And she does try very hard to think of something to ask about Sam's explanation, but somehow what she ends up actually saying is -

"Ava won't tell me what to do."

(It might sound a little like Elle's telling on her.)

Andrew's looking at the table, and a dull flush is heating his ears.

"Yeah," he says heavily, "no, I wouldn't have. 'Cause that was when I was still not talking to you about Ava."

"I know about it, yeah." Sam gives her a thin smile. "After all, I was there."

Beat.

"The question is, how come you do?"

"... oh."

Awkward.

"Yeah. That, uh, makes sense, then."

"I'm a good hunter."

Y'know, in the loose definition of the word 'hunter'. But it's all she's going to say on that matter.

She picks up another fry, gives it a good swirl in ketchup, then takes another bite.

"So. Old Yellow Eyes had some pretty big plans for you, didn't he?"

Light dawns.

"Ohhh." He shakes his head. "I wouldn't know, honestly. I never really learned that sort of thing."

They'd never stayed in one place long enough for him to have the need.

X studies him carefully.

"The plumbing would be difficult. You are very big. And the spaces are usually small."

"Doesn't matter," he points out, without missing a beat.

"Seeing as how had's the operative word there."

"So yeah," he says after a moment, very low. "I don't think she's gonna do it again. But, well." A touch bitter. "She's fooled me before."

"Do?"

Sam looks as surprised as he sounds.

"About what?"

"Hey."

Firmly. Sam leans forward a little.

"Not just you. Remember that."
