As soon as the shower had started running in the motel's bathroom, Sam had seized his chance. He yelled something indistinct about lunch, grabbed his laptop and messenger bag, and headed straight for Milliways without waiting for Dean to answer.

Now he's sitting at a booth, the laptop open in front of him, staring at something on the screen.

(From time to time he stares at a note, instead.)

Either way, it doesn't look like he's making much progress.

"Sam," X says.

Her approach is very quiet, but at least she stays out of his blind spots.

"You are working?"

"You're not interrupting," he assures her. Sam partially closes the laptop screen with an absent motion as he smiles.

"Hey, X."

X looks a little dubious, but only a little.

"Okay."

Beat.

"You have been busy? At home."

She thinks it has been a while. But time in Milliways -- or between Milliways and the rest of the universe -- is strange. Sometimes.

A wry look passes over his face.

"Kinda, yeah." A beat. "How are things with you?"

"They are okay. It is quiet. At home."

She hesitates another few seconds, then sits down across from him.

"I am coaching baseball."

[gavemea_45]

"Quiet's good," Sam observes, and then blinks.

"Baseball? Coaching? Really?"

"Yes. Third base."

She tilts her head a little, studying Sam.

Then --

"Tomas asked."

Could it really be that easy?

In the blink of an eye - or you know, when Sam looks up - there will be a pretty blonde girl sitting right across from him.

She smiles.

"Well, hello, Sam. Didn't expect to see you here."

He doesn't quite startle, but it's a near thing.

"You." Sam stares at her. "What are you doing here?"

She gives him an innocent shrug and an accompanying wide-eyed look.

"What, can't a girl get a drink and maybe a plate of fries at the end of the universe once in a while?"

... in fact.

She flags down a waitrat and does just that.


Sweetly: "Did you want anything?"

"Yeah."

He shuts the laptop and eyes her over the top of it.

"I want to know about that knife of yours."

She simply shrugs as the waitrat takes that as its cue to go off and retrieve her order.

"Well, it sure comes in handy when I have to save the damsel in distress, doesn't it?"

For an instant he looks as sour as though he's bitten into a lemon, but shoves it aside.

There are far more important things at stake than his pride.

"You killed demons with it." A beat. "Where did you get it?"

At some point, Elle's standing near his booth.



She might eventually move up to saying some kind of greeting. The way she's staring in an only slightly grumpy way might work instead.

On the other hand, he might get there first.

"Hey, Elle."

[ellectrical]

"Hi."

It's only a little flat.



There's still another moment before she looks down at the table and asks, "What're you doing?"

"Working on stuff," he says, a little dryly. "You're not interrupting, though."

[ellectrical]

It doesn't make her sit. She just folds her arms, and leans into the side of the booth.


"I -"

It's barely out before she seems to change her mind on it. There's a pause, and instead she goes with, "What're you working on?"

Even feigned, the interest is a little dim.

"A Latin translation."

Sam's looking at her a little more carefully now.

Andrew hasn't been around the bar much in the past two weeks. He's had a lot to think about.

He's here today, though, stepping in the front door not far from Sam's booth.

The motion of the door opening catches Sam's attention, and he glances up.

A second later he glances back down at the note.

Sam shoves it under the laptop, closes the screen, then looks up and waves at Andrew.

The wave catches his eye; he looks across, and --

He doesn't brighten exactly, but his face gets a lot more focused, and he starts in Sam's direction.

"Hey, Andrew."

Sam's searching his face.

"How's it going?"

[stilljustandrew]

Sam's looking at him like he's just been released from the hospital, and he's not sure how he feels about that.

"Working on okay," he says.



"I talked to Ava."

[gavemea_45]

He lets out a slow breath, and nods to the seat across from him.




"I'm sorry."
